Cedar Grove Skater Wins Gold at Special Olympics

Robert Stutts, 14, of Memorial Middle School in Cedar Grove took home a gold medal at the New Jersey Special Olympics in Mountain Creek, a published report said. Stutts, a figure skater, earned gold and silver medals after competing against 30 other opponents in the 2013 Winter Games, according to the Verona-Cedar Grove Times. "He is such a good boy and a hard worker," Robert's mother Maria told the Times. "He's come a long way with his skating and really did a good job."

Young Middle Schoolers Dedicate Themselves to Journalism

Cedar Grove's youngest journalists are dedicating two days a week after school to work on their seasonal issues for the Memorial Middle School Newspaper Club. English and Language Arts teacher Amanda Badami has been running the newspaper club for the past four years. The club has been in existence for eight years. “The kids find an academic interest which really gets them interested and gets them writing more,” said Badami. “They like being creative and its something they really enjoy.” The club, made up of more than 30 students from grades five to eight, meet after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays where students write articles on various topics for their seasonal issues. Cedar Grove Fourth Graders Get Ready for Middle School

Memorial Middle School Vice Principal Nick DeCorte spoke to North End students about transitioning to the middle school.

On Thursday, March 7, Memorial Middle School Vice Principal Nicholas DeCorte visited North End Elementary School to read to fourth grade students for Read Across America and to answer any questions about transitioning to the Middle School. The students asked many questions ranging from remembering locker combinations to extracurricular activities and what to do without recess. DeCorte answered all the questions to help ensure all the students are ready to transition into being middle schoolers.

TREP$ Marketplace Teaches Students How to be Entrepreneurs

Cedar Grove's youngest businessmen and businesswomen learn what it takes to succeed in business at Sunday March 3 event at Cedar Grove High School.

Student entrepreneurs will once again learn what it takes to start and run a business while making some cash on the side as the third annual TREP$ Marketplace returns to Cedar Grove. For the past two years, fifth grade through eighth students in the district have learned different aspects of running a business by creating a business model and then put it into action for a bazaar-style market attended by their peers, parents and teachers. “We have more students this year than in the past with just over 200 students with 160 booths,” said Cedar Grove Memorial Middle School Principal Richard Mangili. “It has grown so much and become so successful that we are holding it at the high school because we didn't want to turn anyone away.” The event…

MMS Clothing Drive Friday and Saturday

The Memorial Middle School Family School Association will be collecting new and gently used items on Friday, October 5 and Saturday, October 6.

Cedar Grove Memorial Middle School will be collecting gently used or new clothing and items for their Spring Clothing Drive on Friday October 5 and Saturday October 6. In addition to clothes, the MMS Family School Association (FSA) are accepting hats, belts, handbags, bed linens, towels and stuffed animals. Shoes will be collected but must be bagged separately. Drop off times are in front of Memorial Middle School between 6 and 8 p.m. on Friday and 8 to 10 a.m. On Saturday. Memorial Middle School is located at 500 Ridge Road in Cedar Grove. The FSA will be paid per pound for the donated items which will then be distributed to families in countries around the world. Verona, Cedar Grove Back-To-School Dates

Mark your calendars with these important reminders.

  Verona students go back to school on Thursday, Sept. 6. Cedar Grove students return the following Monday, Sept. 10. Here are a few dates to keep in mind for both districts as you plan the next few months. If you have anything to add, please let us know in the comments section below or email jack.durschlag@patch.com. The Verona school district is closed on Monday, Sept. 17 and on Wednesday, Sept. 26. Students have half-days for teacher professional development on Monday, Oct. 8 and Wednesday, Oct. 31. In November, schools are closed on Nov. 6, 8, and 9, and for Thanksgiving on Nov. 22 and 23. On Dec. 21, there will be another half-day for teacher professional development. Schools also are closed starting Monday, Dec. 24, re-opening on …

Memorial Middle School Students Perform in Robin Hood

Show took place Feb. 10 and 11.

Students at Memorial Middle School recently took part in the production of Robin Hood. The play took place the weekend of Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11 and was directed by Angelo DeFazio and Melissa Mooney.
