County Truck Loses Axle, Stalls Traffic

Rear axle of Department of Public Works vehicle loses hydraulic fluid at intersection of Grove and West Bradford avenues Thursday afternoon, ties up traffic on major thoroughfare.

The axle on an Essex County Public Works truck broke off at the intersection of Grove and West Bradford avenues in Cedar Grove Thursday afternoon, causing traffic delays in the area. Cedar Grove Police Chief Richard Vanderstreet said no injuries were reported and no other cars were involved when the truck’s rear axle broke off the vehicle at around 12:35 p.m. The truck began leaking hydraulic fluid onto the roadway and the Cedar Grove Fire Department was called to put down Speedy Dry, an absorbent used for removing chemical spills, Vanderstreet said. “They were able to get it under control very quickly,” he said, adding the fire department was successful in keeping it out of the storm drains as well. Verona Council Approves New Parking Regulations

New rules banning overnight parking between 2:30 a.m. and 6 a.m. at municipal Lots 1 and 2 aid local businesses.

  Verona businesses near Grove Avenue and Park Place will finally see some parking relief thanks to a move by the township council. Cars are now prohibited from parking overnight in municipal lots 1 & 2, a move that business owners said will help ease garbage pick up and deliveries. Back in April, restaurant owner Kim Cheung, owner of Belle Gente Trattoria, along with several other affected business owners approached the Verona Township Council asking for the help. Monday night, the council unanimously passed an ordinance prohibiting parking at metered spaces in Municipal Lot 1 off Park Place and Municipal Lot 2 off Grove Avenue between 2:30 a.m. and 6 a.m. The ordinance does allow for parking in the lots if the township authorizes it. …
