District officially accepts Dr. Gene Polles' retirement during Tuesday night's meeting.
Members of the Cedar Grove School District took time Tuesday night to honor one of their own - Dr. Gene Polles, who will retire at the end of June. The board officially accepted Polles’ resignation during the public session portion of the meeting, thanking him for his efforts during his eight-year stint as superintendent. “My time within the Cedar Grove School system has been a fulfilling experience,” said Polles. “While I will surely enjoy the leisure time and intellectual pursuits afforded by retirement, I will miss my colleagues, many of whom have become true friends.” The board took turns praising Polles and what he has meant to the district. “I've had the pleasure of working with Dr. Polles closely for the last four years and he has …

Districts across New Jersey await state aid figures this week with uncertainty.
Verona and Cedar Grove Schools face the deadline to submit the 2013-2014 budget to the county next week with uncertainty as to whether $85 billion in federal "sequestration" spending cuts will be stopped by Congress before Friday. The district will learn its state aid figures this week after Gov. Chris Christie delivers his fiscal year 2014 budget address Tuesday afternoon. “We got a total of $488,000 from the federal government from 2012 to 2013,” said Verona Superintendent Steven Forte. Verona, Cedar Grove districts review procedures following 26 deaths at Sandy Hook Elementary School last Friday.
The Verona and Cedar Grove School Districts are re-examining their safety guidelines following the Friday, Dec. 14 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. School officials have been in close contact with local police to ensure the safety of all Verona and Cedar Grove students. Hurricane Sandy forced schools to close for five days.
Power was restored to the South End of Cedar Grove - including the South End Elementary School - early Sunday night, said Mayor Peter Tanella. “PSE&G has been a good friend to us,” said Tanella. “They worked all day to get South End running and have been doing a great job.” They will now focus on the remaining pockets of town which are still without power including Rugby Road, Sherman Avenue, Todd Terrace and Ridge Court. “We are aware of them and are now turning our focus to those areas to return power to all parts of the town,” said Tanella. The Cedar Grove School District Thursday night announced via Nixle classes in the district's K-12 programs will be back to a normal schedule and will include full-day classes, with the exception of Tuesday, Nov. 6 for Election Day, when the district will have early dismissal. The district was scheduled to have off Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for the annual NJEA teacher's convention in Atlantic City. However, because of Hurricane Sandy, classes were cancelled in the district this entire week. Classes at the St. Catherine of Sienna school will not be affected. Verona, Cedar Grove prepare for first day of classes with new staff, new principal at North End School.
Verona and Cedar Grove students won’t be the only ones going through growing pains this fall when school returns. Both districts will feature new administrators and especially new teachers when school opens shortly. The most notable Cedar Grove change was the retirement of North End Elementary School principal Dr. Lawrence Neugebauer. Cedar Grove Superintendent Dr. Gene Polles named Traci Dyer as his replacement, describing Dyer in a letter to parents as “extremely knowledgeable and experienced in elementary education” and welcoming Dyer as “an integral member of the administrative team here in Cedar Grove.” In his letter, Polles praised Dyer as someone who has held educational positions as an Early Childhood and Elementary Education …

Verona students go back to school on Thursday, Sept. 6. Cedar Grove students return the following Monday, Sept. 10. Here are a few dates to keep in mind for both districts as you plan the next few months. Verona High School adds course electives while Cedar Grove expands their math program.
When students return to Verona and Cedar Grove High Schools in about two weeks, they’ll return to their schools with more course options than ever before. In Verona, the district has added new electives in Visual and Performing Arts as well as in 21st Century Life and Careers/Technology. Verona High School now offers college credits through new relationships with nearby colleges as well. The New Jersey Department of Education requires all graduates to take five credits in Visual and Performing Arts and five credits in 21st Century Life and Careers/ Technology. Best teachers/professionals of the year sought, sports events coming up.
The Cedar Grove school district is taking nominations for the best teachers or professionals of the year for each school. The qualifications include the teacher or school professional who is a "dedicated and skilled" leader, who has a track record in educational activities within and outside the district, engages families with learning and "demonstrates a strong commitment to creating a climate of caring and respect conducive to effective teaching and learning," according to the criteria listing. Prior teachers or school professionals who received the award in the past five years are not eligible. Applications are due May 18 to each individual building principal.
