James Caldwell High School freshman Dean Caravela surpasses father's record set in 1986, as well as 2004 school record.
Breaking a school record is one way to make your parents proud. But what happens when that record was formerly held by your dad? James Caldwell High School wrestler Dean Caravela achieved 35 wins his freshman year, the most in a single season in the program’s history. It’s a record his father Tom Caravela set in 1986, when he went 29-3 as a senior grappler with the Chiefs. The record was challenged by Blake Maffei, Mike Kwapniewski and Steve Martell, the latter who went 33-0 in his 2004 state championship season. Verona and Cedar Grove Seniors will be heading to Atlantic City to compete in the 2013 State Wrestling Tournament.
Verona and Cedar Grove High School Seniors will be heading to Atlantic City to compete in the 2013 State Wrestling Tournament. The top three wrestlers in each weight class moved on to compete in Atlantic City. Verona Senior Frank Greco, 182 lbs., placed first at the Region 4 Championships at West Orange on Saturday, March 2. Verona Senior Joe Cordasco, 170 lbs.Placed third. Cedar Grove Senior Vin Cordasco, 220 lbs., won third place and will be heading to Atlantic City to represent the Panthers. The competition begins Friday, March 8 at 5 p.m. at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Click here for the schedule. The 33rd Annual Caldwell 8th Grade and Under Wrestling tournament took place on Sunday at James Caldwell High School. The event attracted 335 wrestlers from all over the tri-state area and included state and county champs from various areas. In attendance were 13 wrestlers from the Newtown, Conn. Youth Wrestling Association. Their teammate, Jack Pinto, was a victim of the recent Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Donations came from all over New Jersey (Caldwell, Verona, Cedar Grove, West Essex, Scorpions Wrestling School, Kearny, Passaic Valley, Montville, Nutley and many others). Cedar Grove Coach Mike Brown and the Cedar Grove Wrestling community donated $1,100 dollars as well as a huge box of gear. The Caldwell Wrestling Club, co-…
