Verona Fair in the Square Kicks Off Saturday

The 16th annual event returns to Verona from noon to 5 p.m. at the Verona Civic Center.

This weekend marks the kick-off of an annual Verona tradition — the launch of the annual Fair in the Square on Saturday at the Verona Civic Center. “Fair in the Square has become Verona’s tradition, drawing people from all over town and surrounding communities,” said Mayor Frank Sapienza. “The fair is great because it is so community and family oriented, with plenty of activities, entertainment, and food; and will have children and adults enjoying a great day outdoors meeting their neighbors.” This is the 16th year of the fair, which also includes shopping, games and family fun. Verona Mayor Dissatisfied with PSE&G Response

Sapienza dissatisfied with lack of communication from utility company after Hurricane Sandy.

Verona Township officials, police, fire, rescue squad and volunteers have been working tirelessly to get the town back on the grid, but officials say PSE&G may not be doing all it can to help them. On Friday, Nov. 2, four days after Hurricane Sandy, about 70 percent of the town was still without power, according to Verona Office of Emergency Management Director Jeff Hayes. “We are well ahead of other towns in terms of restoration,” said Hayes. “There are still wires on the street and we don't know if they are live. Whether its live or not, it’s live until someone tells us its dead.” In one instance PSE&G came in and “reluctantly” told them a primary wire was dead, said Hayes. When the wire was confirmed dead, the town was able to remove …

So I witnessed a couple trucks working on a pole near FN Brown School and 30 minutes later half of Verona lights up like the Fourth of July... It is an outrage of what little time was needed to get a very large percentage of power restored to the town... From what I could tell this small fix brought power to Woodland east to Bloomfield and Pompton south to Fairview. I am still appalled at what …   more ›

Medevac Transports Verona Trauma Victim

Helicopter touches down on Veteran's Field

A man with multiple stab wounds was airlifted to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Paterson Monday after a medical rescue helicopter landed on a Verona field. Witnesses said the man, who's name was not released, appeared to be in his 50s and because of his wounds, he needed to be transported to the nearest trauma hospital. Verona Police Chief Douglas Huber said the initial indication was the man was stabbed, but he could not release further details citing health privacy laws. Huber confirmed the incident took place at a local residence. The man was transferred to 880 Bloomfield Ave. where the Medevac helicopter landed on Veteran's Field, a grass surface. Reached by telephone, Township Manager Joe Martin said Monday he was gathering …

It's "a man whose name," not "a man who's name." Sheesh, don't you guys know basic grammar and punctuation? At least business at town hall went back to normal. All that hullaballoo over the stabbed guy must have caused a serious disruption in the pressing business of coffee drinking and LOL Cat picture viewing.   more ›

Revamped Verona Website Meets 21st Century

The municipality has done away with the cluttered previous site in favor of a functional design and slick, modern look.

The new Verona Township website has been live for almost a month and the verdict is in — positive feedback all around. The new site, vernonanj.org, was designed with ease, up-to-the-minute notifications and mobile device compatibility in mind, according to Program Coordinator Steve Neale of the township Recreation Department.  Neale said his job is to manage and post information to the site, as well as remove old or outdated posts.  “We’ve received a lot of positive feedback about (the new site),” said Neale. “It’s so much easier to use now, easier to navigate.”  The need for a better site with new and reliable hardware backing it up became dreadfully apparent after the snow and ice storms last October knocked out service in a freak …
