Local Wrestlers Show Support for Newtown at 33rd Caldwell Tournament

Money and gear donated by teams across the state for family of Sandy Hook victim and his teammates.

The 33rd Annual Caldwell 8th Grade and Under Wrestling tournament took place on Sunday at James Caldwell High School. The event attracted 335 wrestlers from all over the tri-state area and included state and county champs from various areas. In attendance were 13 wrestlers from the Newtown, Conn. Youth Wrestling Association. Their teammate, Jack Pinto, was a victim of the recent Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Donations came from all over New Jersey (Caldwell, Verona, Cedar Grove, West Essex, Scorpions Wrestling School, Kearny, Passaic Valley, Montville, Nutley and many others). Verona Wrestling Returns With Young Team

Hillbillies will be led by Festa, Cundari

The Verona wrestling team is coming off of one of the best seasons in recent history, or at least in head coach Donald Morgenroth's tenure. As a team, the Hillbillies went 15-5 and won the Super Essex Conference Liberty Division. Colin Farawell was the lone wrestler to reach the state championships in Atlantic City, but the Hillbillies sent a host of wrestlers deep into the regional championships after a tremendous showing at districts. "It was by far one of the best seasons since I've been here and been getting involved. I think it was due to some great upper classmen that we had, some good leadership and some younger kids that came in and really had a good work ethic," Morgenroth said.
