Verona Council to discuss phase II of the Hilltop Park project during a special meeting on Tuesday, May 21.
The Verona Township Council will hold a special meeting, Tuesday, to discuss the next phase of the Hilltop Park project. The meeting will be held Tuesday, May 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the VeronaTown Hall Council Chambers. In April, the council voted 4-1 to approve the $5.125 million bond to finance the project. Dozens of Verona residents packed the chamber to show support for the athletic field project. After a lengthy discussion, Mayor Frank Sapienza, Deputy Mayor Bob Manley, Councilman Jay Sniatkowski and Councilman Michael Nochimson all voted in favor to thunderous applause from those in attendance. Unofficial results from Essex County Clerk put Verona's Bob Manley up on Rich Williamson by single vote.
Verona and Cedar Grove residents have decided to maintain the status quo voting their incumbents back into office, according to unofficial results from the Essex County Clerk's Office. In Verona, incumbents Kevin Ryan and Jay Sniatkowski won with 1,153 and 1,036 votes, respectively. Incumbent Bob Manley eeked out a victory over challenger Rich Williamson by a single vote, with Manley garnering 1,009 votes and Williamson 1008. Manley isn't celebrating just yet, however. “It's extremely close,” said Manley just after the numbers came in Tuesday night. “I think we have to wait for the county to do a final count, but hopefully it will be good news.” Williamson was not immediately available for comment. Verona's healthcare consultant Mark Ferrara addressed the Verona Township Council on Monday, May 6 about impending increases in healthcare costs, according to a published report Tuesday. Ferrara and Verona Township Manager Joseph Martin discussed the Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare,” and how it will pertain to the township and costs associated with the new law, according to NorthJersey.com. Verona's seven council candidates took to the stage in front of about two dozen residents Tuesday night for a public forum focusing on Phase II of the Hilltop Reservation, transparency in government, expanding local business and salary negotiations. Three possible tax levies to be considered by council.
At Monday night’s Verona Township Council meeting, the board reviewed and introduced the 2013 municipal budget and discussed the potential tax impacts. Verona Township Manager Joseph Martin called the introduction an “important step in the budget process,” adding the blueprint is not yet finalized and further discussions need to take place before the plan is eventually adopted by the council. The 2013 budget totals $21,311,735, of which $15,234,972, or 67 percent, will be covered by taxes. The tax levy would have been $19,764 lower than in 2012 if not for storm emergencies, Martin said. “The council needs to decide in the coming weeks on the levy amount to be raised by 2013,” said Martin. Teacher for 38 years announced his candidacy in the May 2013 Verona Council election.
Al De Old, a Verona resident of more than 40 years, announced early last week he would be a candidate for the Verona Township Council in the May 2013 election. Township Council settled with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection over litigation dating back to 2007.
The Verona Township Council announced at its Tuesday night meeting it had settled a lawsuit with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) involving the township’s wastewater treatment plant on the Peckman River. The NJDEP imposed certain requirements in December of 2007 for the plant, but the township felt some of the regulations imposed by the NJDEP did not apply to the township. Verona Township is looking to past storms to better prepare for future emergencies.
Verona Township is looking back to Hurricane Sandy to see how it can improve its response to future emergency situations. During the Verona Township Council's public meeting on Monday, Verona Director of the Office of Emergency Management Jeff Hayes presented the council with “lessons learned” from Sandy. “After every storm with a lot of activity we conduct a lessons learned meeting so that we can better ourselves for the next storm,” said Hayes. “As we prepare for emergencies in the township we follow four major categories: mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.” The township has brought in an outside consultant to review areas of the town which could be upgraded through the use of generators.
