Police look to public for information on several car burglaries.
Police are urging residents to keep their cars locked as they investigate a string of car burglaries that hit Verona in the last week. On May 11, seven cars were burglarized on various streets throughout Verona, police said. “We definitely believe that the same people or person was responsible for the thefts in the area that night,” said Verona Chief of Police Douglas Huber. “Every once and a while towns get hit and every once and a while we get lucky and make an arrest.” Police are looking to the public for any information on any suspicious activity in the area of the burglaries. Massachusetts man arrested after shoving, struggling with Verona Police Officer.
A Massachusetts man was charged with assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest after officers caught up with him following an alleged drunken driving hit and run. Verona police said they were called to a car accident at the intersection of Bloomfield Avenue and Mount Prospect Avenue at 7:41 p.m. on Monday, May 6. Additional officers were called in to help search for a white Mercedes, which had left the scene of the accident, police said. The Mercedes was found and stopped in the area of Birdseye Glen. When the driver, later identified as Michael Ginis of Newton, Massachusetts, was pulled over, police smelled alcohol on his breath, according to Verona Police. Jose Borgos, 57, of Newark is responsible for two recent burglaries in Verona, police said.
A Newark man, arrested for attempted burglary in Verona, racked up several additional charges after police linked him to an April break-in, Verona Police said in a written statement. Jose Borgos, 57, was arrested on Monday, May 6, for attempting to break into a home on Derwent Avenue and for giving false information, said Verona Police Chief Douglas Huber. Verona and Cedar Grove Police Departments held a medicine collection day on Saturday, April 27, with no questions asked.
The Cedar Grove and Verona Police Departments collected a combined total of 127 pounds of unwanted or expired medicine, part of Operation Take Back New Jersey Day, organized by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Each department had officers on hand to collect and discard medicine with no questions asked on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at their respective municipal buildings. “Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs,” Verona police said. “Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.” During the last collection, held in October …

Several pieces of jewelry and an iPad were stolen from a Mount Prospect Avenue residence, police said.
Verona police are investigating an April 26 burglary of a Mount Prospect Avenue home in which jewelry and electronics were taken, officials said. Police said they were called on Friday at around 1:30 p.m. to investigate the burglary. “The resident reported returning home to find that the front door had been kicked in and the home entered,” police said. “Once in the home the suspect entered the bedrooms went through the dressers.” The resident reported several pieces of jewelry and an iPad were missing, police said. Detectives looking for clues to several burglaries which occurred between Monday, April 8, and Wednesday, April 10, police said.
Verona detectives are investigating a series of burglaries in the township over the course of three days last week, officials said Tuesday. In the first incident on Monday, April 8, Verona Police were called to a Bloomfield Avenue residence at 10:38 a.m. in response to a burglary. The owner reported during the past month someone had entered the home and removed several door handles valued at $1,000, police said. At 6:18 p.m. that same day, police were called to a Martin Road residence on a separate burglary incident. A resident reported that she discovered several items missing from the residence, police said. Fairview Avenue resident returns letter to post office, gets visit from man looking for package, police said.
Verona police are cautioning residents after a Fairview Avenue resident received a pair of suspicious letters within a few days, addressed to a man who doesn’t live at the address. According to police reports, on March 29 the homeowner received a letter at her home, but it was addressed to a man she didn’t know. She brought the letter to the post office and informed postal officials the man didn’t live there. Later that day, police said, a man arrived at her home looking for a package that was supposed to be delivered to a different address in the area. The homeowner told the man the letter was returned to the post office and the man left. Several days later, the woman received a similar letter in the mail, returned it to the post office …

Verona police arrest Ronald McManus for possession of drug paraphernalia hours after he allegedly left the scene of an accident.
[Updated: Tuesday, March 26 11:00 a.m.] Verona police searched without success on Thursday, March 21 for Ronald McManus at a West Caldwell business where he works to ticket him for leaving the scene of an accident earlier in the day and driving with a suspended license. But, according to Verona police, that was just the beginning of the North Haledon resident’s troubles. In the accident, police said McManus was driving on Bloomfield Avenue around 4 p.m. when he allegedly hit a car at the intersection of Bloomfield and Fairview avenues and then left the scene. Police seek information from public on home burglary.
Verona Police are investigating a Wednesday burglary and are looking to the public for leads. The front door of a Linden Avenue home, close to Cumberland Avenue, was kicked in sometime between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, police said. Verona Chief of Police Douglas Huber could not be reached for comment and it is unknown what was taken as of Thursday afternoon. Police are urging residents to call the Verona Police Department at 973-239-5000 with any information. All calls will be kept confidential, police said.
