Pilot program will require students to have ID cards in their possession.
Students attending Verona High School will undergo new security measures under a pilot program slated to begin next week, officials said Wednesday. In response to the December 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn., in which 26 people were killed, district personnel and police officials have been attending twice-monthly meetings and classes to learn measures to improve school safety as well as preparedness, Verona Police Chief Douglas Huber said Wednesday morning. At the last safety class in February, he said, Verona Schools Superintendent Steven Forte and several police officers attended. As part of the pilot program, students are being required to have their school identification cards in their possession, Huber …

West Orange council president's Wednesday trial reset for Jan. 16 at 5 p.m., according to Municipal Court Administrator Jean DePoe.
West Orange Council President Victor Cirilo’s trial on drunken driving charges in Verona Wednesday was postponed until Wednesday, Jan. 16, according to court officials. Cirilo is charged with driving while intoxicated following a Nov. 9, 2012 police stop after he made a turn from Bloomfield Avenue onto Mount Prospect Avenue (Route 23) just after midnight, Verona Police Chief Douglas Huber said at the time. Verona Municipal Court Administrator Jean DePoe said the postponement was granted at Cirilo’s lawyer’s request. At the time of his arrest, Cirilo was administered a field sobriety test, Huber said, but he refused to take a blood alcohol test. Cirilo also faces careless driving and failure to keep right charges. He was originally …

An early morning accident in Verona left a woman injured and a utility pole split in half.
An early morning crash Monday left a woman injured and damaged a utility pole on Mount Prospect Avenue (Route 23) in Verona, police said. Verona Police Chief Douglas Huber said the unidentified woman was travelling south on Mount Pleasant Avenue at approximately 3 a.m. when she hit the electric pole, splitting it in half and knocking wires down before the vehicle flipped. Road conditions at the time of the accident were clear and dry, Huber said, adding he did not know if she was speeding. Mount Prospect Avenue from Bloomfield Avenue to Sunset Avenue were closed …

PSE&G replaces pole after accident causes power loss for 121 residents and businesses along Bloomfield Avenue Tuesday.
Police have issued a ticket for careless driving to a 60-year-old Montclair man, who crashed his car into a light pole on Tuesday night. The one-car accident on Bloomfield Avenue happened shortly after 6 p.m. near the Annin Flag Company. Verona police say Sanford Brown was driving a Volvo station wagon east on Bloomfield Avenue when he lost control of the car and veered into a light pole. He also nicked a fire hydrant and smashed into a telephone pole before coming to a stop. Brown was uninjured in the accident, Verona Police Chief Douglas Huber said, although rescue squad members at the scene examined him. The accident closed Bloomfield Avenue for an hour, Huber said, and left the roadway partial closed for an hour after that. Tuesday …

Group seeks ban against fathers who allegedly drank, lit fires, left children unattended during five-hour party.
Verona parents who are angry about a group of fathers who supposedly got drunk at a school camping trip have taken their issue to the Internet. After demanding that the Verona School Board take action, parents have launched an online petition trying to get the fathers banned from future school trips. As of Monday, the petition had 20 signatures. The fathers are accused of leaving their charges while they lit fires and drank alcohol in another cabin during a five-hour party. The camping trip, at the YMCA Camp Bernie in Port Murray, was for Verona’s fifth graders from the H.B. Whitehorne Middle School. At the June 19 school board meeting, parents demanded the board take action against the parents. Schools Superintendent Steven Forte said the…
