Forum Enables Council Candidates to Debate Issues

Verona council hopefuls discuss improving the business district, transparency and employee salaries.

Verona's seven council candidates took to the stage in front of about two dozen residents Tuesday night for a public forum focusing on Phase II of the Hilltop Reservation, transparency in government, expanding local business and salary negotiations. The forum, at the Verona Community Center, featured incumbents Jay Sniatkowski, Kevin Ryan, and Bob Manley and challengers Rich Williamson, Alex Roman, Al DeOld and Teena Schwartz, who are all running for three four-year seats on the Verona Township Council on May 14. Local Halloween Events Brewing in Essex

From haunted houses to haunted walking tours, fun activities are underway around the area.

Sinkhole May Cost Verona Schools $30,000

District may need to make adjustments to make football field ready for season.

The Verona School District may have to spend as much as $30,000 to repair a sinkhole on the high school football field, a report in the Verona-Cedar Grove Times said Tuesday. The first Verona home football game is scheduled for Sept. 22, but the newspaper says district officials are already making contingency plans to schedule five home football games and a multi-district marching band festival to the high school’s lower field. The Times report, citing district officials, said the field would require $25,000 worth of adjustments to make it suitable for football and the marching band competition. That figure includes the rental of bleachers, portable bathrooms, a press box and goal posts, in addition to the relocation of the school's …

Last Chance: History of Annin Flag

Tomorrow night, Annin & Company and the Verona Historical Society present flag-making program at Verona Community Center .

The Verona Historical Society, as part of their Labor Day celebration, will be hosting a history of flag making presentation through the eyes of Annin & Company, Verona's own landmark flag company. The company is one of the world's oldest and largest manufacturers of flags, in operation in Verona since World War I. Tomorrow, join the Verona Historical Society and Dale Coots, marketing director of Annin & Company to learn about the history of flag making and how Annin Flag came to be an integral part of Verona’s history. The presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Verona Community Center Ballroom, located at 880 Bloomfield Ave. in Verona.

Junior Woman's Club Plans Membership Social

Verona group seeking new members for community service and volunteerism organization.

The Junior Woman’s Club of Verona is hosting a new member social tomorrow for anyone interested in joining the organization. The club, which was recently recognized at the state level for its outstanding community service and volunteerism, will host the event beginning at 8 p.m.  There is no charge to attend the social.  Women interested in attending the event should email membership@veronajuniors.org for more details.  The Junior Woman’s Club of Verona holds business meetings the second Wednesday of each month from September to June at 8 p.m. in the Verona Community Center. Junior Woman's Club of Verona Hosts Event

Annual Senior Dinner draws nearly 100 senior residents.

To the Editor: The Junior Woman’s Club of Verona recently held its annual Senior Dinner at the Verona Community Center. The event, which drew nearly 100 senior residents, featured entertainment by Joey Arminio of the group Joey Arminio & “The Family” and food from Lombardi’s of Cedar Grove.  Members of the Verona High School girls’ lacrosse team and the Juniorettes also played a role in making the event a success, as they offered their assistance throughout the evening. Verona Juniors to Host Senior Dinner May 21

Deadline to respond for free dinner for all Verona senior citizens is May 7.

The Verona Juniors will hold their annual Senior Dinner at the Verona Community Center on May 21 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This event is open to all Verona senior residents. There is no charge. Dinner will consist of a hot buffet, hot and cold beverages, and dessert. Space is limited. Please call Marisa at (973) 857-4831 to make a reservation.

Verona LIVE Hosts Wine and Cheese Café Thursday

Social evening planned for active adults.

Verona LIVE will host a Wine and Cheese Café on Thursday night at the Verona Community Center. The event, a social evening for active adults, will begin at 7 p.m. and include activities and music provided by local musicians, Hospitality.  The program is being planned by the Roadmap to Retirement Committee and is one in a series of ongoing programs for those who are newly retired or considering retirement. The committee is interested in helping active adults find ways to use their lifelong skills and connect to others who share their common interests and make new friends. Verona LIVE came to Verona in 2010 with the goal of assisting town residents age 60 and older remain in the community. Over the past two years, Verona LIVE has instituted …

The Verona Senior Club was entertained Wednesday afternoon by the musical stylings of the Humdingers at the Verona Community Center, 880 Bloomfield Ave., Verona. The Senior Club is looking for new members. By a razor-thin margin, The Coloring Room in Caldwell held off held off Jumpnasium in Fairfield to win the weekly Patch Reader’s Choice Best Place to host your child’s birthday party poll. The Coloring Room, located at 287 Bloomfield Ave. in Caldwell, is an art and pottery studio offering a variety of programs for children and adults.
