Four Shops Chockfull of Chocolate

Local chocolatiers have got the goods on Valentine’s Day.

“It’s all about the heart-shaped box.” So says Ginny Monk of Bromilow’s Homemade Chocolates—and she ought to know. As the granddaughter of the founder, Monk said she's been working in the family business her "entire life.” Opened more than 50 years ago in West Paterson, Bromilow’s still crafts their chocolates on site using their exclusive family recipe. “Our base chocolate has not changed since we started,” said Monk.  It’s a chocolate area residents have found and appreciated for the past 34 years, ever since the family expanded their business to West Caldwell with a storefront in the Essex Shopping Mall.  For Valentine’s Day, the store offers a wall of heart-shaped boxes, graduating in size and price. The boxes range from a manageable $…

Verona Students Making Gifts From the Heart

Participating in annual Hearts of Hope program for St. Barnabas patients.

Students of F. N. Brown and Brookdale Elementary Schools in Verona annually participate in the Hearts of Hope program under the direction of their art teacher, Joni Jasterzbski, who was once herself a Hearts of Hope recipient. Hearts of Hope is a program which distributes small, hand-painted, ceramic hearts to people struggling with illness. Over the last five years, over 25,000 hearts have been distributed by Hearts of Hope, with almost 2,000 of those coming from Verona in the last three years alone. Each heart is designed by the children and accompanied by a personal note of encouragement from the artist. Most of the hearts from Brookdale and F. N. Brown are delivered to patients at St. Barnabas and surrounding facilities during a …
