Fairview Avenue resident returns letter to post office, gets visit from man looking for package, police said.
Verona police are cautioning residents after a Fairview Avenue resident received a pair of suspicious letters within a few days, addressed to a man who doesn’t live at the address. According to police reports, on March 29 the homeowner received a letter at her home, but it was addressed to a man she didn’t know. She brought the letter to the post office and informed postal officials the man didn’t live there. Later that day, police said, a man arrived at her home looking for a package that was supposed to be delivered to a different address in the area. The homeowner told the man the letter was returned to the post office and the man left. Several days later, the woman received a similar letter in the mail, returned it to the post office …

Verona, Cedar Grove residents have mixed emotions on plan to end mail delivery by Aug. 1.
Calling the six-days-per-week mail delivery business model “no longer sustainable,” the U.S. Postal Service announced Wednesday it will eliminate Saturday delivery of mail by Aug. 1. The plan to change delivery from six days a week to five would only affect first-class mail. Packages, mail-order medicines, priority and express mail would still be delivered on Saturdays, and local post offices will remain open for business Saturdays. Some Verona and Cedar Grove residents seemed indifferent, while others have been adamantly against the decision. U.S. Postal Service rates are set to increase by one cent on Jan. 27.
Residents going to the post office will need to carry an extra penny or two. Postage rates will rise slightly this month, according to the U.S. Postal Service. According to an announcement by the postal service, new postage rates go into effect on Jan. 27, with letter and postcard stamps being affected. The U.S. Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations and doesn’t receive tax dollars for operating expenses. Stamp prices will increase one cent, from 45 cents to 46 cents, to mail one-ounce letters. Postcard stamps will also see a one-cent increase, from 32 cents to 33 cents. The cost for letters weighing more than one ounce will stay the same, at 20 cents for each additional ounce. …

State agency working to help residents whose mail never made it to government offices.
The state Department of Treasury is working to assist residents in many Essex County towns whose mail, sent to government offices between Sept. 7 and Sept. 10, burned in a truck fire last month. Affected zip codes begin with 070 to 076, 078, 079, 088 and 089. All of the mail that was on the truck on Sept. 11 was destroyed in the accident near Hightstown on the New Jersey Turnpike when the truck carrying it burst into flames, according to a press release sent out by Gov.
