One in five residents said they felt forced out of their homes by the storm.

Superstorm Sandy made an impact on approximately two-thirds of the state, according to results from a Rutgers-Eagleton Poll released Tuesday. An even higher percentage (94 percent) of the 1,228 polled New Jersey residents reported that they lost power at some point during or after the storm. About 65 percent of those polled said they remained without power for at least five days.  "Two-thirds of New Jersey residents were affected when Superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc on the Garden State three weeks ago," a press release about the poll said. Approximately one in five residents said they were forced out of their homes by the storm, with about 6 percent of residents telling pollsters they were still not able to permanently return. "We already …

Sandy Poses Unique Challenges to NJ Candidates

Politicians said this election season was 'very difficult' because of storm.

After millions of New Jersey residents spent most of last week without power, gas, and even lost their homes, Tuesday’s general election was likely the farthest from their minds. But for politicians who have continued to campaign through the storm, the election has remained a focus. “It’s been a very, very difficult procedure because of the storm,” Essex County Freeholder Vice President Patricia Sebold said. Sebold is the Democratic chairwoman in Livingston and has helped local candidates with their own races. She said her candidates have struggled to reach voters as power outages have stopped their printer, in Irvington, from producing mailers. “I’ve never experienced anything like this ever, in all my years of being involved in politics…

Residents Regroup After Hurricane Sandy

Bagel shops overflow in Verona while residents in Verona and Cedar Grove pick up the pieces after Hurricane Sandy.

When Hurricane Sandy struck Verona and Cedar Grove Tuesday, the damage was overwhelming. Office of Emergency Management of Verona officials said Tuesday 80 to 85 percent of township residents remain without power, while in Cedar Grove, Mayor Peter Tanella said 90 percent of township residents have no power. The storm ravaged trees in both Verona and Cedar Grove, making driving a treacherous obstacle course. Police are urging residents to stay indoors if possible. Schools in both Verona and Cedar Grove will be closed on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Verona Superintendent Steven Forte announced the closing and Halloween events will have to be rescheduled. The Verona Board of Education meeting, scheduled for Tuesday night was rescheduled for Thursday, …

NJTransit System Reports 'Unprecedented Devastation'

Extensive damage could delay service restorations across rail and bus linking NJ, NY and Philadelphia

The nation's largest statewide public transportation system says it faces a massive repair and restoration effort in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. NJTransit, consisting of 12 commuter train lines, 3 light rail lines and 261 bus routes, suffered "unprecedented devastation" from the storm, according to James Simpson, New Jersey's transportation commissioner and chairman of the NJTransit board. The system normally provides 895,000 weekday trips, servicing 164 rail stations, 61 light rail stations and more than 19,000 bus stops. Little of that activity was evident on Tuesday, however. Instead, transit crews had begun an extensive damage review. “With the break of daylight, NJ TRANSIT began to inspect and assess the full extent of the damage," …

Sandy's Wake Leaves Verona Powerless

Director of The Office of Emergency Management for Verona Jeff Hayes says 80-85 percent of the township remains without power and cautions residents to avoid downed wires.

Verona did not fare well from Hurricane Sandy Monday as evidenced by downed wires, power outages and tree-damaged homes and roads that littered the township Tuesday. At a morning briefing Tuesday, Director of the Office of Emergency Management for Verona Jeff Hayes said 80-85 percent remains without power and wires are “down all over the township.” Verona police released a NIXLE alert this morning warning residents to stay away from wires, Hayes said. Verona Township Manager Joe Martin warned residents to be cautious with all of the live wires and damage on their properties. “By day two,” Martin said, “the number of injuries go up. By day three, they go up exponentially.” Martin cautioned residents to “be careful. Avoid live wires.” Strong…

Pockets of Verona, Cedar Grove Lose Power

Transformers throughout both towns malfunction, leading to power outages.

Verona and Cedar Grove Police are reporting power lines are snapping and trees limbs are breaking as Hurricane Sandy slams into New Jersey. “Transformers are going out throughout the town and power is going out in pockets,” said Cedar Grove Mayor Peter Tanella shortly after 9 p.m. Monday. “Our first responders are going throughout the neighborhoods to attend to downed wires.” Tanella said he had power on and off at his house before it shut off for good around 9 p.m., he said. As the wind increases power outages are expected and residents are urged to stay inside and be safe, Tanella added. “Power outages are pretty widespread,” said Verona Police Chief Douglas Huber. “The most intense seems to be the Forest Avenue area.” In addition, …
