Council discusses the next phase for redevelopment of multipurpose sports field.
The Cedar Grove Township Council unanimously agreed to move ahead with the design phase for a redeveloped multipurpose sports field during its Monday night meeting. The council approved plans to award money for Panther Park — a lighted football, soccer and lacrosse field with stands, a walking and running track and concession stands and bathrooms, according to Cedar Grove Councilman Joseph Chiusolo. “We are going to be awarding a contract for about $38,000 for the design phase for the completion of the park,” Chiusolo said. The council began discussions on the project back in March and revisited redevelopment at its Sept. 17 meeting. Board plans to permanently end $21,000 payment at Sept. 10 meeting.
Cedar Grove Council members are sending a message to taxpayers - they are willing to work for free. After refusing to accept $21,000 annual stipends for the last three years, council members are planning on eliminating the stipends entirely at their Sept. 10 meeting. Under the new plan beginning June 15, residents will now need to separate these items into separate biodegradable bags, with recycling pick-ups on Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays depending on the address’s zone starting June 15. Plastic bags will no longer be acceptable receptacles “We only found this out late last week,” Tucci explained. “One of the trucks was turned away from the incinerator [in Newark], had to go back and separate the trash.” Council members expressed concerns there might be a …

I admire the Council members for wanting to formalize their practice of the last several years. These are volunteer positions -- although demanding and time-consuming -- similar to being school board members. I agree with Deputy Mayor O'Toole that these positions should be sought based on a person's desire to serve our community and on the ability to commit his or her time, not on any token …   more ›
