Polls open at 6 a.m. for Verona and Cedar Grove's municipal elections.
Municipal elections kick off in Verona and Cedar Grove this week with seven candidates competing for three council seats in Verona and four candidates running for three seats in Cedar Grove. Polls open at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14, and close at 8 p.m. Click here for more information on the candidates. It's a busy week for Verona Cedar Grove with several important meetings and events. The Cedar Grove Township Council will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 6, at town hall for a public session. The council will present a proclamation to the Cedar Grove Ambulance & Rescue Squad for its 75th anniversary. The council is also set to consider introduction of bond ordinance concerning Panther Park improvements as well as amending the capital budget. An agenda is attached. In Verona, the board of education will meet on Tuesday, April 30 at 8 p.m. at Verona High School. After a week packed full of meetings, this week is light in both Verona and Cedar Grove. The Cedar Grove Township Council will not meet until Monday, May 6, while the Cedar Grove Board of Education will meet Tuesday, April 30. Both township councils and BOEs in Verona and Cedar Grove meet this week for public sessions.
After a quiet week for meetings last week, both the Verona and Cedar Grove councils and boards of education will be back in session this week. The Cedar Grove Township Council will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 15 at town hall, located at 525 Pompton Ave. The council will hold a special public council session prior to its regularly scheduled meeting to discuss amending the $12.5 million 2013 municipal budget. In addition, the council is expected to consider adoption of that blueprint, which would raise resident taxes by 2 percent, as well as considering a resolution concerning the adoption of the 2013 Solid Waste Collection District Budget. The number of budget hearings in both Verona and Cedar Grove are dwindling week. The Cedar Grove Board of Education meets on Tuesday March 26, at 8 p.m. in the North End School’s Media Center. The board is expected to recap the entire 2013-14 school budget and publically introduce the $27.7 million budget at the meeting. A meeting agenda is attached as a pdf. “Our budget is at the two percent cap,” said Superintendent Dr. Gene Polles. “This means we are looking at $103.06 as the average property tax on an average assessed home of $466,200.” In last year’s budget, a homeowner with a home assessed at the township average of $470,400 saw their taxes rise $55.34 per $100,000 of assessed valuation. The Verona Township Council will begin its yearly budget workshop on Monday, Feb 15. The workshop will begin at 7 p.m. at the Verona Civic Center Municipal Chambers. During the last public meeting, members of the Verona Council could not reach an agreement whether the workshops, which are open to the public, should be televised on local cable access.
