Clifton man tried to have his uncle killed by two men, authorities say.
Alexandros Sgourdos, co-owner of The Grove catering hall in Cedar Grove, was the intended victim of an elaborate murder-for-hire plot involving his nephew, state police said at a news conference Wednesday. Sgourdos is a co-owner of the Tick Tock Diner in Clifton, as well as the Cedar Grove catering hall, located at 691 Pompton Ave. Diner manager Georgios Spyropoulos, 45, of Clifton was arrested Monday at the Allwood Road eatery for allegedly plotting to have his 57-year old uncle killed, authorities said. Sgourdos could not be reached Wednesday afternoon for comment. “Motivated by greed, Spyropoulos allegedly had planned in great detail how he would have his uncle tortured, robbed and murdered, and he has enlisted two men who he thought …

The Cedar Grove Planning Board approved The Grove catering hall's application for 39 additional parking spaces after three hour meeting Tuesday night.
After two months of deliberations and hearings, the Cedar Grove Planning Board approved an application from The Grove catering hall for 39 new parking spaces Tuesday night. The board’s 7-1 approval, following a three-hour meeting, is contingent on several conditions being met by the facility including the elimination of grass islands for additional parking, granting certain off-site parking conditions and allowing smaller buffer zones in certain areas. The board gave owners permission to install up to 16 hydraulic lifts underneath the building, although that condition is contingent on the owners completing that phase only if it is absolutely necessary. Catering hall representatives outline a plan to add spaces to their lot, in addition to off-site parking.
Representatives from The Grove catering hall asked the Cedar Grove Planning Board Tuesday night to add 39 parking spaces to its venue and to allow off-site parking. The Cedar Grove Planning Board is expected to vote on the measure at its Sept. 18 meeting. In the past, representatives from The Grove and the township have had an adversarial relationship. Residents have charged overflow parking from the catering hall causes parking and traffic issues in the streets surrounding the business. In September 2011, Cedar Grove police were forced to close down several lanes of Pompton Avenue (Route 23) when Grove guests attending a wine tasting were crossing the roadway at dusk and creating a dangerous situation. On Sept. 20, 2011, residents …
