The Weekender: Concerts, Cards and Meetings

Plenty of activities to keep you busy on this first weekend of 2013.

St. Jude's Fundraiser, Tot Shabbat Top Weekend Events

Youth Group Hosts Car Wash

Members of Temple Sholom of West Essex TaSTY club washed cars to celebrate Rosh Hashana last Sunday.

Members of the Temple Sholom of West Essex youth group, known by the acronym TaSTY, held a Jewish New Year Car Wash to celebrate the holiday of Rosh Hashana last Sunday at the synagogue. TaSTY members, in grades 9-12, washed cars for a few hours.

This Sunday, as the day draws to a close, the Jewish community will ring in year 5773 as part of their celebration of Rosh Hashanah, or the Jewish New Year. The festivities will continue until nightfall on Tuesday, Sept. 18. Residents Deliver for Local Charities

Report says state, Verona and Cedar Grove push New Jersey to number eight ranking for donations.

Rabbi Lawrence Groffman of Temple Sholom of West Essex in Cedar Grove realizes one of the reasons his temple is so successful is because of his congregation’s generosity. “Our High Holiday campaign supports the overall day-to-day running of the temple,” Groffman said, “Our whole congregation is generous.” A new study released Monday by The Chronicle of Philanthropy shows Essex County residents share Groffman’s assessment locally, countywide and statewide. Charitable donations for non-profits and religious institutions in the state for 2008 ranked New Jersey in eighth place in the country, according to the report. The report used IRS tax record for 2008, the most recent year data was available, to examine income levels and charitable …

No Summer Slowdown at Temple Sholom

The month of June means many things — warmer days, long nights spent outdoors and the end of the secular and religious school years. On Friday, June 15, Temple Sholom of West Essex will honor graduating seniors with scholarship awards beginning at the 8 p.m. Shabbat services. Come join Temple Sholom of West Essex for a Rock 'n Roll Shabbat service experience on Friday June 1 at 6:30 p.m. Mama Doni will teach all participants about celebrating Shabbat in a fun, cool way. The next few months will be a busy at Temple Sholom of West Essex. Time is running out to complete the temple long-range planning online survey, with the deadline Wednesday, May 1. The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete and will let temple members have a say in the temple’s future. What's Going on at Temple Sholom of West Essex?

Events, activities, trips all taking place at temple in next few weeks.

It will be a busy Spring at Temple Sholom of West Essex in Cedar Grove. The congregation has planned the following events and activities: The temple will commemorate Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, on Friday evening, April 20 , at 6:30 p.m. At that time, the temple will engage in an act of legacy perpetuation. During the service, a special mantle will be dedicated to a Holocaust Torah Scroll from Czechoslovakia. Congregant Peter Layne has worked to recreate the original Torah mantle from the Torah for the occasion.  The congregation’s ongoing program to restore a letter in the Holocaust scroll is also continuing.
