Verona High School Launches Safety Program Monday [POLL]

Pilot program will require students to have ID cards in their possession.

Students attending Verona High School will undergo new security measures under a pilot program slated to begin next week, officials said Wednesday. In response to the December 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn., in which 26 people were killed, district personnel and police officials have been attending twice-monthly meetings and classes to learn measures to improve school safety as well as preparedness, Verona Police Chief Douglas Huber said Wednesday morning. At the last safety class in February, he said, Verona Schools Superintendent Steven Forte and several police officers attended. As part of the pilot program, students are being required to have their school identification cards in their possession, Huber …

Verona Schools Seek Advertising Revenue

Board of Education plan to bring advertising revenue - including the Yankees - to the district during its Nov. 13 meeting.

The New York Yankees are coming to Verona — at least virtually. The Verona Board of Education unanimously approved a measure Tuesday night that will allow paid advertising to appear on its website as an alternative form of revenue. The district will hire an advertising company to place ads on the site. If successful, the district may look into getting a sponsor for the Friday Folder email blast or even ads on the Verona High School football field. The Yankees will hopefully be the first advertiser, Forte said Tuesday. Yankee pitcher CC Sabathia held a baseball clinic on Thursday, Aug. 2 at Verona High School that was attended at 300 children as part of The PlayStation CC Sabathia Baseball ProCamp. “It's a different way of looking at things…

Verona Schools to Unveil Chaperone Policy

New district policy to be announced at board of education meeting tonight at high school.

Superintendent Steven Forte is expected to announce a new district-wide school chaperone policy when the Verona Board of Education meets tonight at 8 p.m. In June, H.B. Whitehorne Middle School principal Yvette McNeal emailed fifth-grade parents about a May incident where a group of fathers supposedly held a party in a cabin during a fifth-grade camping trip at Camp Bernie in which alcohol was served, a violation of both school and camp policy. Parents were outrages as more details were revealed alleging the fathers were drinking and lighting fires in other cabins during a five-hour party while the 10 boys they were supposed to be watching slept in another cabin. “These fathers should be banned from future class trips,” Palma Quagliata, a…

Middle School Mold Remediation Nearing Completion

F.N. Brown Middle School has been undergoing $35,500 remediation and waterproofing work to clear the school of any potentially harmful mold.

While Verona middle school students have been enjoying a summer of camp, swimming, vacations and sightseeing, district officials have been hard at work. The district has been working all summer at the F.N. Brown Middle School, where the building has been undergoing remediation and waterproofing to clear the school of any potentially harmful mold. “We had an air quality issue in January because of a water seepage problem,” Verona Superintendent Steven Fiore said recently. “We did some air quality testing with an outside consultant and it was recommended that we close a couple of rooms along the front of the building,” Forte said.  The next step, he said, was waterproofing to stop any water seepage into the school. After waterproofing they …

Parents Launch Petition Against Camp Bernie Chaperones

Group seeks ban against fathers who allegedly drank, lit fires, left children unattended during five-hour party.

Verona parents who are angry about a group of fathers who supposedly got drunk at a school camping trip have taken their issue to the Internet. After demanding that the Verona School Board take action, parents have launched an online petition trying to get the fathers banned from future school trips. As of Monday, the petition had 20 signatures. The fathers are accused of leaving their charges while they lit fires and drank alcohol in another cabin during a five-hour party. The camping trip, at the YMCA Camp Bernie in Port Murray, was for Verona’s fifth graders from the H.B. Whitehorne Middle School. At the June 19 school board meeting, parents demanded the board take action against the parents. Schools Superintendent Steven Forte said the…

Were talking accountability here………………. Why should the BOE punish the all future Verona parents for the actions of the 5th grade class Camp Bernie parents?? The Class of 2019 should be the only class monitored since their chaperones were the only ones showing poor judgment. Let the “Class of 2019” parents pay expense’s for “Police monitoring/escorts” on other activities for the “Class of 2019” …   more ›

Verona BOE: Chaperones Allegedly Partied on Fifth-Grade Trip

Board promises policy changes for future trips, dismisses punitive actions after fathers allegedly drank, lit fires, left cabins unattended.

[UPDATED: 9:30 p.m. Wednesday] The Verona Board of Education said it will tighten its rules about chaperoning class trips after a group of fathers supposedly held a party in a cabin during a fifth grade camping trip.  H.B. Whitehorne Middle School Principal Yvette McNeal emailed details of the incident in a letter to parents of all fifth graders earlier in the week. Additional details were learned at Tuesday night’s meeting, including information the fathers, who were supposed to be chaperoning the 10 boys, left them without a chaperone while they lit fires and drank alcohol at another cabin during a five-hour party. “These fathers should be banned from future class trips,” said Palma Quagliata, a parent of a fifth-grader on the trip. “A …

I am curious as to what type of punishment you think should happen. If it is preventing them from chaperoning in the future.... don't worry I doubt they would want to.   more ›

Verona High School to offer College Courses

Students from the district and beyond can jump start their college careers.

Starting this summer, high school students from Verona and surrounding towns can enroll in one of three college-level courses being offered by the district. For the first time this year the district is bringing the Summer Enrichment Academy (V-SEA) program to the high school where students in 10th through 12th grades have the opportunity to not only take challenging courses, but also to earn college credits.  Through partnerships with area colleges, the high school will offer a history course, an English course and a culinary course, all of which can be taken for high school credit, college credit or both with the program’s duel enrollment option. And the best part is students can get a college education not to mention credit at a fraction…

Full-day Kindergarten May Become a Reality in Verona

Residents to cast their vote on the measure in November elections.

Although parents of preschoolers in Verona have been petitioning for full-day kindergarten periodically over the years, next year just might be their breakthrough year. A determined group of parents have recently organized  to raise the issue once more, and this time their proposal is quickly gaining traction. “We have taken it the furthest than any other group has in the past,” said Crystal Bichalski who along with Dana Wynne initiated the movement for full-day kindergarten. “We are committed to this."   After their children entered kindergarten this year the two started conducting their own informal poll of parents at school pick-up times. They found an interest existed among other parents in town and approached the new Superintendent of…

As an educator and a parent, I do not believe that an additional 1.25 hrs per day of instructional time at the age of 5 will have a major long term impact on most children. According to several national studies, the children who benefit the most from 'full day K' are those who are at risk. I do not believe that most students in our district fit that profile. Kindergarten unto itself is not …   more ›
