Cedar Grove residents will host 'Family Fun Day' American Cancer Society benefit at Snapology of Northern New Jersey.
Parents at Cedar Grove's North End and South End schools have come up with a unique way to not only raise money for the American Cancer Society, but to raise awareness and provide a day of fun activities for local children. They’ve agreed to team up with Little Falls-based Snapology of Northern New Jersey on Saturday, March 2, to host a “Family Fun Day” of building activities for children from 12 to 6 p.m. There will be a $10 charge to participate, with half the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Melissa and Paul Skabich of Cedar Grove are organizing the event and partnering with Donna Meccia, also of Cedar Grove, who opened Snapology of Northern New Jersey in November 2012. Verona students go back to school on Thursday, Sept. 6. Cedar Grove students return the following Monday, Sept. 10. Here are a few dates to keep in mind for both districts as you plan the next few months. Cedar Grove projects include replacement of roofs, windows and doors at high school, Leonard R. Parks Elementary School, North End Elementary School and South End Elementary School.
While Cedar Grove students have spent their summer going to camp, swimming, spending time outdoors and relaxing, the Cedar Grove School District has been hard at work on four new projects to revitalize the schools for September. Four schools — Leonard R. Parks Elementary School, North End Elementary School, South End Elementary School and Cedar Grove High School — are each undergoing roof facelifts. In fact, work on the new roof on the Leonard R. Park School has already been completed, at a cost of $685,392. Fourth-grade students at South End Elementary School recently participated in a Battle of the Books competition hosted by school library media specialist Tracy Reilly. According to officials from the New Jersey Association of School Librarians, "The Battle of the Books is a reading motivation program. The goals of the program are to encourage reading for pleasure, broaden reading interest, and recognize students who enjoy reading." The annual Battle of the Books list consists of 15 books selected by librarians from the group and includes books written by popular authors in a variety of genres such as biography, humor, science fiction, fantasy, adventure, historical fiction and realistic fiction. Ava Silverman's writes winning essay on treatment of students with disabilities.
South End Elementary School fourth grader Ava Silverman recently won an essay contest sponsored by the Essex County Bar Association. The essay question was "What would you do if you saw a person making fun of a student with disabilities and what would you do to make sure that students with disabilities are treated the same as students who do not have disabilities." Silverman's winning essay was entitled, "One Door Closes, but Another One Opens."

$4.5 million will be used for projects at Cedar Grove High School, South End School and North End School.
The Cedar Grove School District was recently named the recipient of more than $4.5 million worth of grants from the Christie Administration for projects at three Cedar Grove schools. The $4,597,995 grant, via the state’s Schools Development Authority, will help pay for work at Cedar Grove (Memorial) High School, South End Elementary School and North End Elementary School. At the high school, the grant will help pay for replacement of windows, doors, ceilings and roofs, as well as the installation of a new rooftop heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. At both elementary schools, the monies will help pay for window replacement, doors and a roof. The local share for the projects will be $6,896,993.

On April 26, Batchmakers Ice Cream, 481 Pompton Ave. in Cedar Grove, held a fund-raiser for South End School in Cedar Grove. Teachers and staff from the school served ice cream, and students and their families showed up en masse to enjoy. Thanks to the generosity of owner Joe Gasparino and the hard work of the faculty, the school raised $643.38.
