Essex County executive highlights accomplishments, announces litany of 2013 projects during annual speech.
Before a crowd of more than 300 people Tuesday night, Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. heralded Essex County’s most significant accomplishments in his 10th annual State of the County address at the Essex County Hospital Center in Cedar Grove. The audience, which included Gov. Chris Christie, state Sen. President Stephen Sweeney and state Assembly Speaker Sheila Y. New Jersey Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver (D-Essex) said there will be a "stark difference" between the policies put forth at the Democratic National Convention, and those touted by Republicans a week ago. Oliver, who is a delegate in Charlotte this week, said the role of government in providing economic opportunity, the issue of tolerance and inclusiveness, and the wilingness to work in a bipartisan way are just some of the issues that separate the two parties. The proposed minimum wage raise from $7.25 to $8.50 an hour will go to the Senate next, with Gov. Christie still undecided on his support
A proposal to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $8.50 an hour advanced in the New Jersey Assembly Thursday, when it passed by a 6-2 vote. Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver (D-Essex) sponsored the bill. The Assembly Labor Committee cleared the bill from Democrats, who have called the bill a priority and hope to make it law by July 1. Though it has not yet received a hearing in the Senate, the bill will require future adjustments based on the Consumer Price index. Gov. Chris Christie said he has not yet made up his mind about the bill but is willing to consider the implications of raising the minimum wage in New Jersey.
