Websites like Yelp! have empowered the everyday eater to become their local neighborhood's New York Times food critic, praising and damning behind the anonymity of a computer screen. Some peeved restaurateurs have argued Yelp! is little more than a "forum for the uninformed," a digitally-savvy clan of unsophisticated palates with little-to-no culinary education. True or not, the reviews listed on the website unquestionably impact popular perception. Will you dine at a place one newspaper critic gave a dazzling review to if the same restaurant was scorned by the unwashed masses? Maybe. Maybe not. So how does the average joe review the many restaurants in Verona and Cedar Grove? Based on Yelp!'s number of reviews, we countdown from #5 down …

The Carriage House is now open at Millburn's playhouse Wednesday through Sunday.
The Paper Mill Playhouse has opened the doors to its own bar and bistro for guests to enjoy before or after plays — or just for another dining option steps away from downtown Millburn. The Carriage House is open Wednesday to Sunday 4:30 to 10 p.m. It is also open for brunch on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. as well as before most performances. The restaurant seats 60 people. "Everyone that's been here said they loved it," chef Holly Guber said. "People have been coming out from around the neighborhood for brunch also." The Carriage House's soft opening was during "The Sound of Music". During "Chorus Line" it opened but only before and after shows. On Friday nights, jazz bands perform acoustically in the bar from 6 to 9 p.m. In January the…

New restaurant at NJPAC offers 'Italian without borders' menu designed for sharing
The curtain's been raised on NICO Kitchen + Bar, the new, chic eatery that raises the bar on dinner-and-a-show in Newark. Tucked inside the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), chef Ryan DePersio's third restaurant in Essex County is inviting with a cool, casual atmosphere and an "Italian without borders" menu of sophisticated dishes designed for sharing. "(These are) dishes that made me who I am today," said DePersio, the 33-year-old Nutley-born restaurateur who also owns Fascino in Montclair and Bar Cara in Bloomfield. Signature bites from his other restaurants, like the grilled pork burger, pomegranate-chili wings with gorgonzola dipping sauce and quattro formaggio pizza, have (thankfully) made their way onto the Newark menu. But …

Ariane Duarte, former ‘Top Chef’ contestant and life-long Verona resident, teams with Finlandia Cheese to create simply delicious dishes.
What better way to spend an afternoon? Finlandia Cheese, a Parsippany-based dairy products company, held a luncheon (“Secrets from a Top Chef”) this Thursday at CulinAriane in Montclair for a hungry and delighted crowd of guests. The cuisine was created and presented by Ariane Duarte, the Verona-bred Top Chef contestant and owner/chef of CulinAriane. Duarte has just partnered with Finlandia to create a menu tailored to their cheese’s rich flavor. The afternoon began with hors d’oeuvres and cheese tasting. Finlandia, whose cheeses have always been lactose free (a big plus for some of us), presented a selection of Swiss cheeses for comparison to their competitors. The Lacey Swiss (named because of its delicate, “lace-like” structure) earns …
