No significant power outages have been reported as of noon Friday, but storm expected to last into early morning Saturday.
No significant power outages have been reported in Essex County a few hours into Friday's Winter Storm, but PSE&G is ready to respond to what could be widespread outages throughout its service area, the utility said in advance of the Nor'easter. Contractors, including tree crews, are poised and ready and additional supplies, such as poles, transformer and other equipment, are on hand, PSE&G said. The Nor’easter could dump more than a foot of snow and bring heavy winds to Essex County, where widespread, long-term outages caused by Superstorm Sandy are still fresh on many residents’ minds. Essex County has declared a state of emergency, according to the county’s Office of Emergency Management. No parking will be allowed on country roads …

Cedar Grove is expecting power outages in the North End section of the township after a train slammed into a tractor-trailer in Little Falls.
The North End of Cedar Grove will be experiencing power outages Wednesday morning while PSE&G begins repairing power lines damaged in an early morning train crash in Little Falls, police said. A tractor-trailer carrying paint was struck by a NJ Transit train on the Montclair-Boonton at 8:15 a.m. causing several injuries, a New Jersey Transit spokeswoman told NJ.com. It has not yet been determined how many of the 66 passengers sustained injuries, she said. NJ Transit is reporting the Montclair-Boonton line is shut down and a substitute bus service will be available.

The Cedar Grove Township Council will purchase generators to keep township buildings running in case of a power outage.
Municipalities around New Jersey learned a valuable lesson from last month’s encounter with Hurricane Sandy — be prepared because when a once-in-a-lifetime storm strikes, it’s too late to start planning. With memories of Sandy still fresh, the Cedar Grove Township Council is looking to acquire some new generators for township buildings in case extreme weather like Sandy shuts down power in the town. At its Dec. 3 public meeting, the council approved a pending bond ordinance on first reading for generators at each of its three firehouses, town hall and the library. Residents need a location close by in case they need a warming station or a place to charge their phones, said Township Manager Thomas Tucci. “After Irene we discussed the …

Electricity went out in Cedar Grove Wednesday night just as Winter Storm Athena began blanketing the town in snow.
Power has been restored to most of Cedar Grove after a power outage on Wednesday night. Although the power went out as Winter Storm Athena swept across New Jersey, Cedar Grove police are not sure whether the storm was the cause of the outage. “The cause may have been a PSE&G infrastructure issue,” said Cedar Grove Police Chief Richard Vanderstreet. Everything South of Stevens Avenue in the township went down, he said. Power went out around 3 p.m. on Wednesday. PSE&G crews responded and had power back on around 5 p.m., said Vanderstreet. “There are still a few pockets in town that do not have power,” he said. PSE&G has developed a six-day work plan to get the remaining residents back on the grid. However, residents who have damage to their …

Township losing power as a nor'easter hits New Jersey, just a few days after residents got their power back following Hurricane Sandy.
Here we go again. Residents of Verona and Cedar Grove are losing power once again as a nor'easter, now named Winter Storm Athena, hit the towns on Wednesday afternoon. “The township is experiencing a wide spread power outage,” Cedar Grove police said. “PSE&G is aware of the problem and is working on a repair.” Residents of both towns were just starting to get their power back after Hurricane Sandy ravaged New Jersey. Verona police are reporting power outages in the Fairview Avenue section of the town due to a Cedar Grove car accident. Verona police are urging residents to call PSE&G instead of the police desk. Cedar Grove has arranged a warming station at the town's Ambulance and Rescue Squad for anyone without power. Residents can bring …

PSE&G has not set a date for when power will be restored.
Verona residents are at home wondering when the power will come back on, but PSE&G is leaving township officials in the dark. Crews have been working around-the-clock trying to fix downed wires and telephone poles after the township got hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. Power has been coming on slowly with a few homes getting electricity restored by Wednesday night although township officials said the number of houses restored was “minimal.” “We've been working with some high-level folks at Public Service to get the people dedicated to Verona to do a more timely restoration of electric service,” said Director of Verona's Office of Emergency Management Jeff Hayes. Power was restored to the Verona Community Center as well as some homes at the …

Transformers throughout both towns malfunction, leading to power outages.
Verona and Cedar Grove Police are reporting power lines are snapping and trees limbs are breaking as Hurricane Sandy slams into New Jersey. “Transformers are going out throughout the town and power is going out in pockets,” said Cedar Grove Mayor Peter Tanella shortly after 9 p.m. Monday. “Our first responders are going throughout the neighborhoods to attend to downed wires.” Tanella said he had power on and off at his house before it shut off for good around 9 p.m., he said. As the wind increases power outages are expected and residents are urged to stay inside and be safe, Tanella added. “Power outages are pretty widespread,” said Verona Police Chief Douglas Huber. “The most intense seems to be the Forest Avenue area.” In addition, …
Widespread loss of power and flooded polling sites are a possibility as Hurricane Sandy threatens state.
Hurricane Sandy could leave polling sites without power on Election Day with utility companies reporting it may take a week or more to restore widespread outages. With the storm just beginning to hit northern New Jersey, Essex County Clerk Chris Durkin said Monday the question of whether voting will be affected by Sandy has weighed heavily on his mind. Durkin said in a worst-case scenario where there is a widespread loss of power and flooded polling sites, the state legislature would decide what action to take. “If there is an issue with power,” Durkin said, “it is the New Jersey Legislature that decides on the alternatives as far as what we do." Both PSE&G and JCP&L, which provide millions of residents with electricity, report it could …
