Verona, Cedar Grove Await Hurricane Sandy

Preparations well underway as township officials, residents gear up for “Frankenstorm.”

Hurricane Sandy is imminently approaching and both Verona and Cedar Grove townships, as well as residents, are prepared and ready to batten down the hatches.  Both townships spent Friday removing leaves from gutters, cleaning out catch-basins and unclogging the Peckman River.  Both townships are reminding residents not to put any more leaves in the street until the storm passes. There will not be any garbage or recycling collection in Verona on Tuesday Oct. 30 or bulk pickup on Wednesday Oct. 31., the township announced through its online NIXLE system. One Year Ago: Remembering Hurricane Irene

Verona, Cedar Grove officials say they are better prepared for emergencies and learned many lessons in aftermath of storm.

Township officials in both Cedar Grove and Verona are confident they’ve learned their lesson from Hurricane Irene as the one-year anniversary arrived today. Verona Deputy Mayor Bob Manley said the township had emergency meetings every day leading up to the storm and afterwards to “discuss how we were handling certain things.” These meetings, and a “lessons-learned” meeting afterward the storm, allowed the township “to come up with a number of plans of action to incorporate at any time,” Manley said. Verona now uses the Nixle system so residents can sign up and get immediate updates on what is going on, he added, and what they might need to be aware of in such situations.
