DiVincenzo announces 1,509 partook in annual event at Cedar Grove facility.

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. announced 1,509 residents participated in the Essex County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, Oct. 13. The fall event, held at the Essex County Fleet Maintenance Facility on Bradford Avenue in Cedar Grove, was an opportunity for Essex County residents to dispose of regular household items such as fluorescent light bulbs, motor oil, cleaners and other items that contain hazardous material in an environmentally friendly way. The collection day was organized by the Essex County Utilities Authority, which contracted with MXI Environmental Inc. to dispose of the products.

Essex Announces County Leaf Pickup Schedule

Residents asked to wait until weekend before pickup to place leaves on county roads.

Essex County residents living on or near county roads should hold off placing leaves by the curb for pickup until the weekend prior to the announced pickup date, county officials said. Leaf collections on county roads will begin at the end of the month and continue into 2013 depending on location. The county has divided leaf pickup into four sections, with three pickups in each of those sections. Residents whose properties are on county roads may place their leaves in biodegradable bags or sweep the loose leaves into piles at the curb during the weekend before the scheduled pickup, county officials said. The sections and schedules are as follows: The county has entered into shared services agreements with Bloomfield, Caldwell, Essex Fells…

Mixing Grass, Trash Prohibited for Cedar Grove Residents

New collection rules require homeowners to bag separately and only use biodegradable bags. No extra cost for homeowners.

Residents of Cedar Grove are now prohibited from disposing of their grass clippings with their regular household trash in the township, according to revised collection rules that recently took effect. The change, stemming from a decision by the operator of the county incinerator, was outlined in a May 22 advisory posted on the township web site.  Under the new rules, grass and leaves need to be bagged separately and will be picked up in biodegradable bags only, the advisory read. Collection will be on residents’ regular recycling days, which vary across town but are either on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. “Branches will be picked up on solid waste collection days and cannot be mixed with grass clippings or leaves,” the advisory says. Bill to Protect Firefighters From Solar Panel Dangers Advances

Assemblyman Robert Schroeder sponsors bill requiring emblem on buildings where solar panels are attached to the roof to protect firefighters from electrocution.

With an increasing number of buildings investing in alternative energy, emergency responders are often unable to immediately identify structures that have installed solar panels on their roofs — putting them at risk of electrocution in the event of a fire.  In an effort to protect firefighters against the danger of electrocution posed by solar panels, Assemblyman Robert Schroeder (R-Woodcliff Lake), a volunteer firefighter in the Township of Washington since 1980 who has twice served as fire chief, has sponsored a bill that would require buildings to clearly label with an exterior emblem whether they have solar panels. The bipartisan bill was approved by the Assembly Homeland Security and State Preparedness Committee, on which Schroeder …
