Council votes $3 million in bonds for Panther Park Monday night.
The Cedar Grove Township Council voted unanimously Monday night to appropriate $3 million for the redevelopment of Panther Park after months of discussion, calling the project “long overdue.” The project calls for a turf multi-purpose field, walking track, concessions and bathrooms as well as renovations to two baseball fields. At the last meeting on Panther Park, Carl O’Brien, a partner at Maser Consulting, presented a preliminary design to the council depicting several different options and possible choices. “The money needs to be put in place first and when it does go out to bid, the council directed Town Manager Tom Tucci to bid it with options,” said councilman Joseph Chiusolo. “Regardless of the options we feel comfortable we will …

Cedar Grove resident Stacy Kilkenny pens Letter to the Editor regarding Astroturf™ vs. grass fields.
Dear Editor, In regards to the Cedar Grove Panther field, I agree with Councilman John Zunic and Joe Chiusolo that the field should be for everyone, and fiscally responsible. The Astroturf™ field is projected to cost $850,000. I understand a grass field costs a fraction of that. My biggest concern is the potential risk to children for carcinogens and neurotoxins (such as lead). Attached please find the the Consumer Reports warning from the CDC regarding high lead levels from Astroturf™, the NJ DEP report web site link, as well as the link to EHHI (an independent environmental group) whom also reviewed the hazards of astroturf. The EHHI link also includes the CDC recommendation for signage at any field with Astroturf™ to include the …

Cedar Grove redevelopment would include a multi-purpose field, running track, concessions and parking lot.
Cedar Grove leaders are taking a go-slow approach to a redeveloped Panther Park after hearing several different options at Monday night’s township council meeting, officials said. The original plan, first discussed in September 2012, included a turf multi-purpose field, walking track, concessions and bathrooms and featured three proposals from different firms from March 2012, Town Manager Thomas Tucci said at the time. The township initially set aside money for a design in the 2012 capital budget but the money was cut back and eventually removed, said Tucci. Carl O’Brien, a partner at Maser Consulting, presented a preliminary design to the council depicting many different options and possible choices. “We have come up with several options …

Plans to improve recreational facilities are high on the priority list in both Verona and Cedar Grove.
Verona Beginning in 2013, Verona Deputy Mayor Bob Manley said one of the council's main issues will be seeing through a project to bring new athletic fields to Hilltop Park. During 2012 meetings, the Council has reviewed plans for a new baseball field, multi-purpose field, walking trails and an amphitheater as part of Phase II of the Hilltop Park development plan. The proposed plan also calls for improvements to two existing fields, Veterans Field and Centennial Field, by adding a new press box and resodding the fields. “We hope the voting on the field for Hilltop can happen very early in the new year,” said Manley. “We hope to get shovels in the ground in spring.” The project would take approximately 18 months to complete, which would …

Council discusses the next phase for redevelopment of multipurpose sports field.
The Cedar Grove Township Council unanimously agreed to move ahead with the design phase for a redeveloped multipurpose sports field during its Monday night meeting. The council approved plans to award money for Panther Park — a lighted football, soccer and lacrosse field with stands, a walking and running track and concession stands and bathrooms, according to Cedar Grove Councilman Joseph Chiusolo. “We are going to be awarding a contract for about $38,000 for the design phase for the completion of the park,” Chiusolo said. The council began discussions on the project back in March and revisited redevelopment at its Sept. 17 meeting. In March, the township received three proposals from different firms and initially set aside money for a …

Township buys five iPads, eliminates paper packets in bid to save money.
The Cedar Grove Council will no longer get paper meeting agendas, committee reports, or planning board documents. Instead, in an effort to save paper, the council voted to make those records electronic and go "paperless" on Monday night. Instead of using the paper documents for meetings, council members will review agendas and other items on hand held computers. To help them, the township has purchased five iPads at a cost of $4,800. “We had been talking about going paperless for quite a while now,” said Township Manager Thomas Tucci. “Thanks to our town clerk, who put it a lot of time and effort into testing it out, we now have files all broken down to make it easy for viewing.” The council estimates they will save between $4,500 and $5…

Council and Board of Education to collaborate on multipurpose fields, running track, additional parking and other additions to Panther Park.
The Cedar Grove Township Council revisited the idea to redevelop Panther Park during its Monday night meeting. “There are a few different concept drawings but the one that has generated the most interest includes a multipurpose football, soccer and lacrosse field with stands, a walking and running track, parking, lighting, concession stands and restrooms,” said Town Manager Tom Tucci. About six months ago the town received three proposals from different firms and initially set aside money for a design in the 2012 capital budget but the money was cut back and eventually removed, said Tucci. “The next step is appropriation for design,” he said. “You have to have design money in place before you can go out and ask for proposals.” The initial …
