Police: Resident's Call May Have Thwarted Burglary

Cedar Grove Police urge residents to be alert after a suspicious incident on Devonshire Road.

A Cedar Grove resident may have stopped a potential burglary, police said, after a suspicious person was spotted visiting various homes on Devonshire Road. Cedar Grove Police were called to the residence at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, after receiving a call of a suspicious person. Police said the man was going door to door claiming that he was soliciting business for snow removal, despite the fact that there only had been a dusting of snow. After speaking with the man, officers became suspicious of his story and did a background check, said Cedar Grove Chief of Police Richard Vanderstreet. They discovered that he had recently been released from jail for burglary offenses, he said. Since no crime had been committed, police had to release the man…

Verona Police Urge Residents to Get Flu Vaccine

The Verona Police Department reminds residents to get a flu shot due to increased reports of the flu.

Verona Police Department issued the following message through the NIXLE Alert System: Due to the increase and severity of Influenza (flu) cases being reported, we are sending out this reminder that Flu vaccines are recommended by the US Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). The flu season runs through March, so it is not too late to receive the immunization.  Adults should contact their physicians with any questions, and to see if they administer the vaccine. If needed, vaccine is available on the first and third Monday of the month from 9 a.m. – 12 noon at the Montclair Health Dept. (973-509-4980). Verona, Cedar Grove Await Hurricane Sandy

Preparations well underway as township officials, residents gear up for “Frankenstorm.”

Hurricane Sandy is imminently approaching and both Verona and Cedar Grove townships, as well as residents, are prepared and ready to batten down the hatches.  Both townships spent Friday removing leaves from gutters, cleaning out catch-basins and unclogging the Peckman River.  Both townships are reminding residents not to put any more leaves in the street until the storm passes. There will not be any garbage or recycling collection in Verona on Tuesday Oct. 30 or bulk pickup on Wednesday Oct. 31., the township announced through its online NIXLE system. State Police, Office of Emergency Management Using New Alert System

State Police and the N.J. Office of Emergency Management can now provide emergency information to residents via text.

New Jersey residents will now be able to receive critical information from the New Jersey State Police (NJSP) and the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management (NJOEM) on their cell phones and PDAs with the use of a free, Web-based service. The NJSP and NJOEM will be using a service called Nixle Connect to deliver important and time sensitive information to the residents of New Jersey. Nixle Connect is an application that allows verified government agencies to communicate with the public via text/SMS, email and Internet posts. This service is provided at no cost to the department, taxpayers or residents and unlike other social media applications, Nixle does not contain any third-party advertisements.
