Win Tickets to NJPAC For Friday Night's "Drumline" Show

Sign up for the Patch newsletter and enter your name to win two free tickets to see music and dancing in "Drumline Live."

There will be Rythm and Blues music, top 40 hits, detailed choreography and drums. Lots of drums. The New Jersey Performing Arts Center is bringing the excitement of an actual drumline to the center stage on Friday night at 8 p.m. in Prudential Hall. On Friday night, the excitement seen in the 2002 movie "Drumline" will be re-created in the show "Drumline Live" that will showcase eras of American history using percussion and brass instruments along with professional choreography. In the movie starring Nick Cannon and Zoe Saldana, viewers saw a dramatization of a drumline-led marching band that takes place at historically black colleges and universities. The team behind that movie has brought the same feeling to the live stage. The show - …

'America's Got Talent' Experience Gets Thumbs Up

Patch editors score tickets to live taping of 'America's Got Talent' at New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark – and they liked what they saw

Even despite my inherent love as a reporter for the occasional happy, heart-wrenching human-interest story, I was skeptical of what I was about to sit through Tuesday night during a live taping of "America's Got Talent." A miniature mariachi singer belting out a love ballad? Muscular men clogging in tight jeans in front of a massive American flag? Tiny dancers cartwheeling in nauseating succession? For two full hours? This was not the Newark I knew. This was some alternate universe. Since early July, NBC's ratings-topping "America's Got Talent" has been filming twice a week at NJPAC, drawing hundreds of out-of-towners to Brick City for the feel-good, all-American show that you can't help but fall in love with. I did. After snagging two VIP…

NICO Kitchen + Bar Serves Up Sophistication

New restaurant at NJPAC offers 'Italian without borders' menu designed for sharing

The curtain's been raised on NICO Kitchen + Bar, the new, chic eatery that raises the bar on dinner-and-a-show in Newark. Tucked inside the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), chef Ryan DePersio's third restaurant in Essex County is inviting with a cool, casual atmosphere and an "Italian without borders" menu of sophisticated dishes designed for sharing. "(These are) dishes that made me who I am today," said DePersio, the 33-year-old Nutley-born restaurateur who also owns Fascino in Montclair and Bar Cara in Bloomfield. Signature bites from his other restaurants, like the grilled pork burger, pomegranate-chili wings with gorgonzola dipping sauce and quattro formaggio pizza, have (thankfully) made their way onto the Newark menu. But …
