Glen Ridge and Montclair police chased a van allegedly stolen by a Newark man belonging to a Verona business on Friday, April 5 throughout both townships before the vehicle crashed and stopped, a published report said Monday. Clinton Perry, 49, allegedly jumped in the truck, parked at Hurrell Field in Glen Ridge, and drove away, Lt. Fred Egnezzo of the Glen Ridge Police Department told NorthJersey.com. Two women attempted to fill numerous prescriptions at CVS, but pharmacist became suspicious, police said.
Cedar Grove police arrested two Montclair women Thursday, March 28 on prescription fraud charges one day after the women allegedly attempted to fill several prescriptions for controlled-dangerous substances, officials said. Marcia L. McCotter, 64, and Sara F. McCotter, 68 allegedly attempted to fill numerous prescriptions at the CVS Pharmacy located at 387 Pompton Ave. in Cedar Grove for Tylenol with Codeine ― a controlled-dangerous substance (CDS) ― with fraudulent, stolen prescription slips, police said. The pharmacist became suspicious of the number of prescriptions McCotter wanted to fill on Wednesday, March 27, Cedar Grove Police Chief Richard Vanderstreet said. Churches in Newark, Montclair were among collection points for 1,770 firearms
More than 700 guns — including an AR-15 high-capacity assault weapon similar to the one used in the Newtown, Conn., school shooting — were turned in this weekend in Montclair during the countywide gun buyback program. The cash-for-guns program was held at five churches at sites in Montclair, Newark and others in Essex County. Verona police officials have praised neighboring Montclair for teaming up with Essex County and get guns off the street. “I think anything that would take any illegal weapons off the street is a good idea,” he said. LifeWorks helps teens overcome awkwardness, learn to interact with fellow teens.
A new 10-week-long Verona and Nutley-based program is helping local teenage boys behave better in school through weekly work sessions that concentrate on developing various social skills. The “Got Skills?” program is one of three teen programs organized by LifeWorks Counseling LLC, run by Licensed Clinical Social Workers Gina M. Unger and Ingrid E. Burke. The group sessions are attended by students who frequently get into trouble at school, get into fights or have challenges making friends. Verona police officials have praised plans by neighboring Montclair to team up with Essex County and get guns off the street. Montclair and Essex County will be holding a gun buy-back in February where anyone can exchange their guns for cash. The gun buy-back was announced last month soon after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that left 20 children and seven adults dead in Newtown, Conn. “The key to the gun buy-back is that they accept weapons unasked,” said Verona Police Capt. Susan Sturner, of Lawrenceville, visited Montclair's Greenleaf Compassion Center for the first time recently and walked out with legal marijuana.
Susan Sturner suffers from fibromyalgia, Hepatitis C and a host of other ailments. To ease her pain, her doctor recently prescribed her with one thing that will help: medical marijuana. Sturner drove to Montclair from Lawrenceville for her appointment at Greenleaf Compassion Center on Dec. 20. She later walked out with her first purchase of medical marijuana -- with no fear of being arrested. “I feel like I’m in a dream,” said Sturner. “I’ve waited so long for this and so many people with the Coalition with Medical Marijuana of New Jersey have worked for years ... to get here.” Sturner is one of the few hundreds of medical marijuana patients going to the newly opened dispensary, which opened on Dec. 6 in Montclair's busy business center…

Montclair resident Daniel Brenner wrote a new song to celebrate the Festival of Lights.
One Montclair resident says there aren’t enough Hanukkah songs, so he wrote his own. Daniel Brenner, 42, recently posted a video of his new song about Hanukkah, titled “A Minor Holiday,” which he hopes will bring major attention to the traditionally lesser holiday. “I’ve been, let’s say, recovering from a certain kind of secret jealousy of Christmas my entire life,” said Brenner with a laugh. Brenner, who is a rabbi, recalled that he was one of the only Jewish kids in his community growing up in Charlotte, N.C., and the yearly Festival of Lights would be drowned out by the ubiquitous Christmas season. Marijuana has arrived in Montclair. Greenleaf Compassion Center, located at 395 Bloomfield Ave., opened on Dec. 6 and became the first medical marijuana dispensary in New Jersey. “We are excited,” said Joseph Stevens, board member and one of the chief financial officers, about finally opening up the dispensary. “For the patients of New Jersey, they finally are able to procure their medication in a safe environment.” The dispensary had scheduled about 20 patient appointments this morning who came from throughout the state, said Stevens. The Hoboken PATH station -- usually full of waiting PATH riders between New York and New Jersey -- remained quiet on Tuesday morning, while Port Authority workers continue to repair the massive damage that was done by Superstorm Sandy. Thousands of gallons of water flooded the Hoboken station, which is currently the only station that is still closed. Water came in through the walls and elevators leading to the station, in one case shattering the elevator's glass. The breaker rooms that house all the electrical wires for the tunnels were severely flooded too and are still being repaired, said acting director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Stephen Kingsberry. The National Weather Service has determined that Superstorm Sandy which caused billions in damages and record floods on Oct. 29 was not a hurricane when it made landfall. Staff writer Richard Degener reports in The Press of Atlantic City that meteorologists have determined that Category 1 Hurricane Sandy was a "post-tropical cyclone" by the time it reached the New Jersey coastline. The designation has an important impact on how insurance companies process claims for storm damage.
