Local Halloween Events Brewing in Essex

From haunted houses to haunted walking tours, fun activities are underway around the area.

Here are a few local Halloween, and Halloween-related events and activities, coming up in the next few days: Thursday, Oct. 25, 7 p.m. Also Oct. 26-28, 30-31 229 Main St., Belleville $20 All new this year, State Scare, located at State Fair Halloween Store, is the scariest indoor haunted attraction in New Jersey. Take a stroll down ‘Maim Street,’ a terrifying little thoroughfare built on the site of the old State Processing Factory, recently razed due to its evil activities. On Maim Street, you’ll find a creepy barber shop, butcher, pub, hotel and 5&10. Montclair State Hosts Boys to Men Empowerment Conference

Conference teaches teens the importance of higher education.

More than 400 students attended the Boys to Men Empowerment Conference held at Montclair State University on Friday. The workshop involved students in grades 9 to 11 from areas including Newark, Teaneck, West Orange, East Orange and Montclair. This was the first Boys To Men conference hosted by the Education Opportunity Fund. The E.O.F. provides access for motivated state residents from underrepresented population areas that meet the state income criteria and exhibit the potential for high achievement. “We are looking at a decline in minority males on college campuses and we wanted to invite them to our campus to expose them to college life and discussions relative to urban development in hopes that they will apply to college beyond high …

Senate Committee Hears Budget Concerns

School advocates say state budget underfunds public schools at state Legislative hearing at Montclair State.

More than 50 people gathered Tuesday in the conference center of University Hall at Montclair State University for the first public hearing of the New Jersey State Senate Budget Committee. Many of the speakers, given four minutes each for their testimony, were advocating for increased funding for public education at Tuesday’s meeting. “The state wants to punish these kids, another generation of kids, by giving the district less money to do more with. How do we do that with increasing enrollment and decreased funding? It seems to me we’re dooming these kids.
