Booker Mulling Senate Run, Won't Challenge Christie

Speculation about Newark mayor's plans swirled for months

Newark Mayor Cory Booker ended months of speculation Thursday when he announced that he was considering a run for US Senate. “[ I ] will complete my full second term as mayor. As for my political future, I will explore the possibility of running for The United States Senate in 2014,” Booker said in a statement released shortly before noon. Political observers in the state and beyond have speculated whether Booker, 43, a Rhodes scholar and Bergen County native, would run for governor against Chris Christie in 2013 or seek the Senate seat now held by Booker’s fellow Democrat Frank Lautenberg. Lautenberg, at 88 the Senate’s oldest member, has not announced any plans to step down when his term expires in 2014. In his statement, Booker’s …

Dan: - Unfortunately Newark has had some extremely bad mayors in the last half a century. The former mayors had a tendency to end up in jail. Comparing Corey Booker to Sharp James, Kenneth Gibson, Huge Adinizo, of Ralph Viliani is not a high bar for comparison. I don't see great management of Newark’s fiscal affairs, I don't see great improvement in police protection, fire protection, sanitation…   more ›

Cory Booker Fires up Crowd at DNC

In short speech, Newark mayor hits on themes of fairness, restoring prosperity.

(Please see our video of an analysis of the speech filmed immediately afterwards.) Newark Mayor Cory Booker gave a brief but rousing speech at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday, touching on topics that included economic inequality, education and breaks for small business. His words brought the audience to its feet.  “This is our American mission. These are the dreams of our fathers and our mothers,” Booker told the crowd gathered in Charlotte, N.C. for day one of the convention. The convention ends Thursday when President Barack Obama formally accepts the nomination.  Booker, the only member of the New Jersey delegation tasked with giving a major speech at the convention, seemed in fine form despite suffering from a “bum ankle” he…

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que Migrates to Newark

Popular New York joint opens on Market Street.

The next big name in barbecue has hatched on Market Street. Dinosaur Bar-B-Que opened its doors for an invitation-only sampling of the authentic Southern fare, a New York favorite and soon-to-be talk of the town among Newarkers. The brand new eatery, situated near Mulberry Street and the Prudential Center, specializes in slow-cooked barbecue, from smoky beef brisket to tangy pulled pork and, of course, beef ribs and chicken wings smothered in owner John Stage's special recipe. "It's supposed to pull off (the bone)," he said, debunking a common misconception among rib-eaters. "If it falls off, it's overcooked." Stage is considered one of the best in the barbecue industry after getting his start in 1983 cooking out of a halved 55-gallon …
