Township Council settled with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection over litigation dating back to 2007.
The Verona Township Council announced at its Tuesday night meeting it had settled a lawsuit with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) involving the township’s wastewater treatment plant on the Peckman River. The NJDEP imposed certain requirements in December of 2007 for the plant, but the township felt some of the regulations imposed by the NJDEP did not apply to the township. According to the resolution passed Tuesday, litigation was brought forth “to contest certain provisions of its New Jersey Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Permit as arbitrary, capricious, unreasonable and without technical basis...” “We try to make sure that the requirements placed upon Verona are appropriate,” said Verona's Attorney …

Planning Board approves application despite opposition.
The Verona Planning Board gave final approval to a plan to build condominiums on Durrell Street, despite objections from a group of neighbors who have filed a lawsuit against the project. The measure – to build new condominiums at the site of the former Bahr Lumber and Hardware site at 37-47 Durrell Street – was originally passed at the board’s July 26 meeting. The plan received final approval on Aug. 23. Verona Planning Board Attorney Gregory Mascera said the plan is now complete at the planning board level. It was not immediately know when the project will break ground. “The litigation will not interfere with the applicants right to proceed based upon the approval,” said Mascera. Lawyer for a Cedar Grove resident who was charged $10,457.90 for his quarterly water bill, says he'll let a court decide if the water meter was faulty.
A Cedar Grove man who had to pay more than $10,000 for his water bill is not giving up the fight. He wants to take the matter to court. Kirit Kothari paid the $10,457.90 water bill in late June that he repeatedly claimed was excessive for his single-family home. According to his attorney, Kothari, the Cedar Grove resident who was charged more than $10,000 for his quarterly water bill back in 2011 may soon begin litigation with the township of Cedar Grove His usual bill for a quarter was around $110. Kothari disputed the extraordinarily high bill for 15 months before he paid it in late June under the threat of having his water cut off.
