Letter to the Editor: Verona Superintendent Steven Forte

Verona Superintendent Steven Forte pens letter to the editor following Hurricane Sandy school closures.

Dear Parents and Guardians, This has been a difficult week for all of us to say the least and I am sure your children are getting a cabin fever being in the house. Good news! We are committed to opening the schools on Monday November 5th in some capacity. All students will be accommodated in the buildings that have power, currently VHS, Laning and Brookdale have power. We will provide everyone with the final plan on Sunday afternoon. The plan will be disseminated via email, Global Connect telephone call, text message, nexile, www.veronaschools.org, and posted on the electronic sign outside of VHS by the afternoon of November 4th. We have also revised the district calendar to include November 8 & 9 and February 19 as school days. We are …

Letter To The Editor: Sen. Kevin O'Toole

Hurricane Relief Information by New Jersey State Senator Kevin O'Toole.

Dear Friends: As we all begin the process of coming up from under a storm that none of us has ever seen in our lifetimes, I’d like to begin by expressing my deepest sympathies and condolences to our fellow New Jerseyans in the Southern part of our state. The devastation that they are experiencing just can not be put into words. As the clean up process begins and power is starting to be restored to many of us here in District 40, it is important to note that over 2 million homes in New Jersey lost power as a result of Hurricane Sandy. I and my office are on conference calls with all of the utilities multiple times a day getting status updates as to their progress. As your local elected officials contact me with power outage information, we …

Letter To The Editor: UNICO LaFesta

Cedar Grove chapter president Sal Ingallina thanks Cedar Grove participants and residents.

Dear Residents of Cedar Grove, During the weekend of September 28-30 our Chapter of UNICO National held our second Italian Festa. This year's Festa provided our community the opportunity to give back and enjoy some great times, great food and lots of laughs. The funds raised this year will be directed to a number of national causes like the Jimmy V Fund and St Jude's Cancer Research Hospital for Children but also to local endeavors like our volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad and scholarships. Additionally the non-perishable food that was collected was donated to the Human Needs Food Pantry in Montclair. I'd like to thank those organizations in town that greatly contributed to this year's success, especially the Cedar Grove Police …

Shared Roads, Shared Responsibilities for Bicyclists and Motorists

Bicycling organizations throughout state call on both bike riders and drivers to work together.

Tensions between bicyclists and motorists are in the spotlight this summer and we believe it’s time we all took more responsibility for cooling the confrontation and sharing the road. We represent bicycle clubs and organizations with over 2,000 members in NW and Central NJ. Each of us is also a motorist. We understand sharing the road from behind the wheel of a car as well as on a bicycle. We are as upset as anyone when a bicyclist does not ride safely or a group of cyclists block the road and surround a car as reportedly happened in Tewksbury this summer. Our organizations train riders on safe road sharing, criticize riders who do not, and are ready to work with police and town officials to make the roads safe for all. We also know, …

Rutgers Student Opines on Bottled Water

Bottled water project educates public about pros and cons of product.

To the Editor,  I am a Rutgers student and I am doing a proposal project for one of my classes. We have been discussing topics that we feel very strongly about and what we can do to change this. I wanted to express my concern about bottled water and how ignorant people really are about wasting resources and money on a liquid that they can get from their own home for free. While bottled water may be seen as a “necessary convenience” nowadays, there are many alternatives that can save our planet and provide safe drinking water for citizens as well. I am sure several people did not know that 70% of bottled water companies are not even approved for regulation and are simply selling tap water with added “minerals and salts.” Another fact that …

Resident Assails Proposed New Development

Letter: Five-acre property zoned retail and residential rental would add to tax burden, add traffic on Westview Road and Bloomfield Avenue.

To the Editor: The five-acre property on the corner of Westview Road and Bloomfield Avenue has been purchased by a developer who proposes to build a three-story structure with 63 parking spaces. One third would be retail, two-thirds residential rental. The community is concerned with traffic safety, child safety, and home safety. Not only will the development come and add the burden of costs for additional students at our neighborhood schools (and our taxes), but possibly put them in harm’s way. One of the ingresses/egresses will be on Westview Road. Cars and trucks will be coming in and out of the development directly across from Everett Field, where there are children playing and attending games for nine months. A multitude of cars and …

This is a horrible idea. When Verona has empty buildings and lots in town, why take down trees and move earth? Sounds like a terrible traffic hazard because of the one way street and ball park there. I hope this does not pass.   more ›

Letter To The Editor

Junior Women's Club of Verona thanks annual Bunny Brunch participants.

To the Editor: The Junior Women’s Club of Verona would like to extend their warmest thanks to all those who attended our annual Bunny Brunch on Saturday, March 24. It’s always so wonderful to be a part of an event that brings families together to eat, play, and create. The money raised benefits our Adopt-a-Family program, which helps families in town who are in need. Therefore, all those in attendance contributed to a very worthy cause. Special thanks to the following local businesses for their support: Bagelwich, Dunkin Donuts of West Orange and Cedar Grove, and Jonathan’s Balloons. An enormous thank you goes out Joann Theobald and Kathy Mortara, who helped organize the Juniorettes’ supervision of our crafts and games. Thanks to Steven A…
