Outdoor movie series in Verona includes 'How to Train Your Dragon,' 'Singin’ in the Rain,' 'Enchanted' and 'Casablanca.'
The Essex County Free Friday Flicks film series will be held every Friday in June at Essex County Kip's Castle Park in Verona. The free film series includes selections for children as well as adults. All movies will be shown under the stars on the grounds of historic Kip's Castle. Essex County Kip's Castle Park is located at 22 Crestmont Road in Verona, on the border of Montclair. Gates open at 7 p.m. Movies begin at dusk. Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. Wednesday announced a $1.5 million renovation to Kip's Castle Park in Verona.
Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. unveiled the county’s Kip’s Castle renovation plans Wednesday designed to bring the century-old home into the 21st century while maintaining its historical integrity. This past weekend Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. invited the public to celebrate the holiday season and participate in the Fourth Annual Essex County Historic Holiday House Tour. Thirteen Essex County historic sites were decorated for the holidays and open to the public for a weekend tour. The tour included Essex County Kip’s Castle in Verona, the Walther House at the Essex County Presby Memorial Iris Gardens in Montclair, Ballantine House at Newark Museum, Canfield-Morgan House and Museum in Cedar Grove, Force Homestead and Museum in Livingston, Glenmont at Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange, Grover Cleveland Birthplace in Caldwell and Kingsland Manor and the Nutley Museum in Nutley.

Two free puppet shows, for children 7 and younger, will be held on October 6 at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Kip's Castle.
The Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs will be hosting two children’s puppet shows at Kip's Castle on October 6. The first show, Puppet Jamz will begin at 2 p.m. and the second show, Funny Farm, starts at 3 p.m. Each presentation will be 30 minutes in length. Since the shows are outdoors, visitors are encourgaged to bring chairs or blankets. Friday night June 15 will be a magical night in Essex County as the Disney movie, “Tangled,” will presented outdoors and under the stars at Essex County’s Kip Castle Park beginning at 8 p.m. Essex County officials, including County Executive Joseph N. The Verona Historical Society tells the history of castle at Tuesday night event.
More than 35 people filled the first floor of Kip's Castle last night to hear Verona Historical Society president Robert Williams explain the history of the residence and clear up some old rumors. "This house is a real tangible link to the gilded era," Williams said. Although the Rhine-style castle, built by Frederick Kip from 1902-1905, may resemble an old English residence, it has many roots in Verona. The castle, built for Kip's wife, Charlotte Bishop Williams Kip, was constructed using trap rock from the Marley Quarry, which used to be at the site near where Bloomfield Avenue meets Pompton Avenue.
