Verona resident runs half marathon in honor of his father and other blood cancer patients.
Verona resident Patrick “PJ” Walshe, a 16-year old sophomore at St. Peter's Prep, will be running a half marathon alongside his father 12-year leukemia patient and survivor, Tim Drost. Walshe and Drost, who ran the same race last year, will once again be running together in the Long Branch Half Marathon for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training (TNT). “I look forward to running this race in honor of my Dad,” said Walshe. “By partnering with The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, he and I can help make a cure for blood cancer become less of a dream and more of a reality.” The pair, who are part of the New York Sports Club’s corporate TNT Team hope to raise more than $50,000 with their teammates. Cedar Grove residents will host 'Family Fun Day' American Cancer Society benefit at Snapology of Northern New Jersey.
Parents at Cedar Grove's North End and South End schools have come up with a unique way to not only raise money for the American Cancer Society, but to raise awareness and provide a day of fun activities for local children. They’ve agreed to team up with Little Falls-based Snapology of Northern New Jersey on Saturday, March 2, to host a “Family Fun Day” of building activities for children from 12 to 6 p.m. There will be a $10 charge to participate, with half the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Cedar Grove Music Matters held its 3rd annual Fat Tuesday Two Mile Run with 23 runners.
The Cedar Grove High School Music Matters program held its third annual Fat Tuesday Two Mile Run with 23 runners taking to the road despite the frigid cold. The race was started by Abraham Lincoln (Philip Jessen) who was celebrating his 204th birthday. Cedar Grove UNICO will watch the Seton Hall Pirates face off against the UConn Huskies Sunday night for its annual Basketball Outing fundraiser.
Cedar Grove UNICO will be hosting its annual Basketball Outing fundraiser on Sunday. “This annual event will be to enjoy a wonderful day of College Basketball between the Seton Hall Pirates and the Uconn Huskies,” UNICO members said. UNICO is selling tickets to the game for $30 with proceeds going toward local scholarships and relief efforts. “As an added feature kids who attend will take part in a greeting line as the Pirates take the court,” said Cedar Grove UNICO President Sal Ingallina. Cedar Grove Chamber of Commerce, who was looking to raise money for the Cedar Grove Rescue Squad, will need to postpone the event until further notice after major sponsors pulled out.
The Cedar Grove Chamber of Commerce, led by president Allen Rosen, will need to postpone their gala, which was aiming to raise money for the Cedar Grove Ambulance and Rescue Squad. The event “Groovin at the Grove” was supposed to be at The Grove catering hall in February, but after several major sponsors pulled out, the gala may be rescheduled towards the end of next year, said Rosen. The Chamber had several major corporate sponsors pull out after Hurricane Sandy, instead putting their money to Sandy relief funds. "It blew us out of the water," said Rosen. The Cedar Grove Ambulance and Rescue Squad will be busy this weekend with first aid training courses and a trip to Mt. Airy Lodge. The Rescue Squad will be offering an American Heart Association First Aid course from 9 am to 12 pm on Saturday October 27th, at the Squad building located at 651 Pompton Avenue. They will be teaching the basics of first aid including basic principles, medical emergencies, injury management and environmental emergencies. Bunco is a game played with three dice, consisting of six rounds. The event, beginning at 7 p.m. will include small finger foods and beverages. Teams can sign up in groups of four or less.
