Multiple departments gather to discuss storm progress, contingency plans.
Verona's Office of Emergency Management held a special meeting Monday night to discuss the progression of Hurricane Sandy and its affect on the township. The meeting was attended by members of the police and fire departments, rescue squad, township council, board of education and department of public works as well as officials from the health, community services and sewer departments and representatives of Essex County. OEM Director Jeff Hayes provided a weather update saying to expect from one to two inches of rain on Monday and about three inches of rain on Tuesday. Superintendent, township officials agree at special meeting safety during storm is prime concern.
Verona Schools will be closed on Tuesday, Oct. 30 as Hurricane Sandy continues to pummel Northern New Jersey. Verona Superintendent Steven Forte, met with township officials during a special meeting on Monday night. “Verona schools will be closed on Tuesday and the board of education meeting has been cancelled,” said Forte. “If schools are open on Wednesday, students will have a half day, as scheduled.” A half-day for students was previously scheduled for Wed. Oct. 30 for a teacher professional development session, he said. The board of education will determine whether they will hold Halloween festivities by Tuesday night. [UPDATED: 2:30 P.M.] Verona and Cedar Grove are ready to face Sandy. Some residential streets seem like a ghost-town, with people staying inside while the wind and rain start to pick up. There were no joggers, dog walkers or even cars parked in the streets. Other areas, such as Pompton Avenue in Cedar Grove and Bloomfield Avenue in Verona were business as usual. Various bagel, pizza, delis and sandwich shops are open in both towns as well as supermarkets. Both Kings Supermarket on Pompton Avenue in Verona and Super Foodtown on Pompton Avenue in Cedar Grove are open with residents shopping for last minute items in full force. “We came out to go to the bank to make a deposit but they were closed,” said Cedar Grove resident Andrea Carter. …

The district will make a decision on whether schools will be open on Tuesday, Oct. 30 on Monday evening. Preparations well underway as township officials, residents gear up for “Frankenstorm.”
Hurricane Sandy is imminently approaching and both Verona and Cedar Grove townships, as well as residents, are prepared and ready to batten down the hatches. Both townships spent Friday removing leaves from gutters, cleaning out catch-basins and unclogging the Peckman River. Both townships are reminding residents not to put any more leaves in the street until the storm passes. There will not be any garbage or recycling collection in Verona on Tuesday Oct. 30 or bulk pickup on Wednesday Oct. 31., the township announced through its online NIXLE system. Latest report from the National Weather Service shows projected rainfall totals double in some spots.
According to the Sunday afternoon report from National Weather Service Meteorologist Gary Szatkowski, the inland flooding threat posed by Hurricane Sandy has increased in the past 24 hours. "The takeaway message is that our region is currently in the path of a very dangerous storm," Szatkowski said. "Even if the eventual path changes, we will still feel severe effects from this storm." Yesterday's rainfall total map of the region (attached to this story) showed the northern end of New Jersey expecting around two inches of rain, four inches in the south and an isolated band of six inches around the Cape May end of the state. In response to the increasing dire forecast surrounding Hurricane Sandy, the Christie Administration announced that preparations have begun for the potential shutdown of NJ Transit bus, rail, light rail and Access Link service, effective Monday. “The safety of our customers, employees and the public-at-large is paramount,” said NJ Transit Board Chairman and New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner James Simpson. “By beginning this important process, NJ Transit will be better able to support the state’s response to Hurricane Sandy by freeing up buses or other resources that may be needed for hurricane relief.” The systematic shutdown of NJ Transit service would require a minimum of 12 hours to complete.
