The F.N. Brown and Brookdale Avenue School communities will all simultaneously read "The Cricket in Times Square" to share a common reading experience.
An entire school community will come together Tuesday, as F.N. Brown and Brookdale elementary schools kick off an initiative in which students, parents, teachers, administrators, custodians, cafeteria workers, bus drivers and everyone involved in the schools picks up and reads the same book at the same time. “The project is called One School, One Book, and it is a program designed to unite a school community in literacy,” said F.N. Brown and Brookdale Library Media Specialist Corisa Walker. The program is sponsored by the Verona Foundation for Educational Excellence. On Tuesday, March 26, F.N. Brown will hold a kick-off assembly at 9 a.m. to introduce students and parents to the program. “We think it will be a great, fun way to set the …

F.N. Brown students are excited to meet new friends and try out their new school supplies.
Students at F.N. Brown Elementary School were excited to meet their new teachers and use their new school supplies, but mostly they were thrilled to see their classmates and exchange stories from the summer. Some kindergarteners were happy to recognize familiar faces from their preschools while others seemed apprehensive about embarking into uncharted territory: elementary school. Whether excited or a little nervous, all the students waited outside the school with their new school clothes and colorful backpacks until the doors opened, marking the beginning of another school year in Verona. The first friendly face to greet students was crossing guard Jim Perkins, a retired New York City firefighter. Perkins, who has two grandchildren at H.…

F.N. Brown Middle School has been undergoing $35,500 remediation and waterproofing work to clear the school of any potentially harmful mold.
While Verona middle school students have been enjoying a summer of camp, swimming, vacations and sightseeing, district officials have been hard at work. The district has been working all summer at the F.N. Brown Middle School, where the building has been undergoing remediation and waterproofing to clear the school of any potentially harmful mold. “We had an air quality issue in January because of a water seepage problem,” Verona Superintendent Steven Fiore said recently. “We did some air quality testing with an outside consultant and it was recommended that we close a couple of rooms along the front of the building,” Forte said. The next step, he said, was waterproofing to stop any water seepage into the school. After waterproofing they …

Fourth-graders at the F.N. Brown Elementary School in Verona recently visited Trenton as part of their social studies unit on New Jersey government. Students explored the Visitor's Center, where they found many exhibits including one in which they followed a ball through a maze that simulates the process a bill goes through to become law. Next they toured the Statehouse, including the governor's office, the state Senate and Assembly. They even participated in a mock election for Governor. Not surprisingly, outlawing homework was a very popular bill and platform for running for governor. The students had a lot of fun and learned even more on the trip, which was sponsored by the Verona Board of Education and the F. N. Brown SCA.
