Verona Announces 2013 Road Projects

Township Engineer Jim Helb presented this year's blueprint to the township council Monday night.

Verona Township Engineer James Helb announced five street projects slated for this year during his presentation to the Verona Township Council during its Monday night meeting. The new projects will either reconstruct or resurface sections of Linden and Personette avenues, Brookside Terrace, Oak Lane, Crane Terrace, Peckman Court and Birch Lane. Reconstruction is when the road needs to be stripped down by two or more layers and built back up, said Jeff Hayes, Director of IT and Office of Emergency Management. “Roads have five layers starting with the ground, then shoulder stone, then a quarry process which is compacted, then a base coat of asphalt and finally the top coat,” he said. Verona Council Discusses Potential Streets for Grant Program

Panel will conduct family income surveys to mark areas that qualify for the Community Development Block Grant program to avoid using local tax dollars.

At the Verona Township Council meeting Monday night, the council discussed possible road projects it should submit for its yearly Community Development Block Grant. The grants provide the township with federal money for various street improvements. However, Congress has dramatically cut funding for the program and made qualifying criteria more difficult over the years, said Verona Township Engineer Jim Helb. “We are revisiting some areas that we had done many years ago and readdressing some of those areas because they do still qualify from the standpoint of income criteria,” said Helb.
