Christmas is still a few weeks away but trees can be seen peeking through windows around Verona and Cedar Grove. Both townships have lit up their trees. Is yours up yet? If you are still sans-tree, here are some local places to pick one up. Or perhaps you prefer a drive to the country to cut your own? Verona children helped make Christmas ornaments to display on the Verona Community Center tree.
Children of all ages gathered at the Verona Community Center’s annual tree-lighting ceremony Wednesday night to brighten up the holidays and make creative Christmas ornaments. Santa and his elves, Joey and Doreen Arminio, played Christmas music to get the kids dancing, while Jim Cunningham and other members of the Verona Recreation Department held a contest where children guessed how many bulbs they thought were on the Christmas tree. The winner, four-year old Elena Spong, guessed 300 light bulbs. As her reward for winning, Elena helped Santa lead the procession outside and announced the countdown to light up the tree. Every year, millions of children sit down to make a wish list for Santa, hoping he will make all of their Christmas dreams come true. But what if Santa actually wrote back? The United States Postal Service is now accepting "Letters From Santa," a program that allows any person to play Santa by sending a letter signed by Saint Nick to any child. According to a postal service news release, "The 'Letters From Santa' program helps parents fulfill the dreams of their own children."
