Cedar Grove Council Looks to Acquire Generators

The Cedar Grove Township Council will purchase generators to keep township buildings running in case of a power outage.

Municipalities around New Jersey learned a valuable lesson from last month’s encounter with Hurricane Sandy — be prepared because when a once-in-a-lifetime storm strikes, it’s too late to start planning. With memories of Sandy still fresh, the Cedar Grove Township Council is looking to acquire some new generators for township buildings in case extreme weather like Sandy shuts down power in the town. At its Dec. 3 public meeting, the council approved a pending bond ordinance on first reading for generators at each of its three firehouses, town hall and the library. Residents need a location close by in case they need a warming station or a place to charge their phones, said Township Manager Thomas Tucci. “After Irene we discussed the …

Cedar Grove, PBA Agree to Deal

Cedar Grove Police, township come to terms on 3-year contract with 2 percent raise for 2013-15.

Cedar Grove and the local Police Benevolent Association have struck a deal on a three-year contract through 2015, township officials announced Monday. After months of negotiations, the sides agreed to the contract that will give PBA members two-percent salary hikes in 2013, 2014 and 2015. The increases are the maximum allowed by the state under the current cap rate. "The meetings were productive and both sides understood where the other was coming from," said Patrolman Robert Hectus, PBA representative for Cedar Grove. "We think the 2 percent is a very fair agreement and we are happy with the length of the contract." Negotiations always take place before the end of the contract for the following year, said Township Manager Thomas Tucci. “…

Of course it was cordial what could the police union do? The state mandate is 2% increases and that's what they got. How is it people on social security are only getting 1.7%? This should have been a rollback of 2% each year. With a 2% increase nothing is done to escape the ever rising police compensations & benefits that are making NJ property taxes some of the worst in the country.   more ›

What Does Going Green Mean for Cedar Grove?

Cedar Grove Township Council will eliminate paper documents but hard copies will still be available to the public, says Township Manager Thomas Tucci.

Monday’s Cedar Grove Township Council meeting marked a milestone for the township. It marked the first night council members were able to use their new township-purchased iPads in an effort to go paperless. Going paperless is an initiative to transfer all paper documents onto electronic devices such as laptops and iPads to eliminate costs incurred by printing products such as paper and ink or toner cartridges. But what does this mean for Cedar Grove residents? Printed meeting agendas will still be made available for residents who wish to attend and follow meetings, Township Manager Thomas Tucci said Tuesday. The township has purchased three new copier-scanners which will allow Township Clerk Kathleen Stutz to keep all records …

Cedar Grove Council Goes Paperless

Township buys five iPads, eliminates paper packets in bid to save money.

The Cedar Grove Council will no longer get paper meeting agendas, committee reports, or planning board documents. Instead, in an effort to save paper, the council voted to make those records electronic and go "paperless" on Monday night. Instead of using the paper documents for meetings, council members will review agendas and other items on hand held computers. To help them, the township has purchased five iPads at a cost of $4,800. “We had been talking about going paperless for quite a while now,” said Township Manager Thomas Tucci. “Thanks to our town clerk, who put it a lot of time and effort into testing it out, we now have files all broken down to make it easy for viewing.” The council estimates they will save between $4,500 and $5…

Facelift Coming For Center Avenue

Cedar Grove agrees roadway will receive a complete reconstruction in the spring of 2013 to fix potholes, add sidewalks.

Residents of Center Avenue were so concerned about safety issues with the roadway, they felt it was necessary to voice those concerns Monday at the Cedar Grove Township Council meeting. And the council responded, agreeing to give the street a complete facelift in the spring. “There is no sidewalk and the potholes are so deep that people drive on the wrong side of the road,” one resident said. “Every year I call and every year I am told that it is going to be fixed next year.” “We have been waiting for five or six years for this to be taken care of,” said another resident. According to Township Manager Thomas Tucci, the township submitted an application to Department Of Transportation for the reconstruction. “Come springtime you are going …

Council Discusses Possible Redevelopment of Panther Park

Council and Board of Education to collaborate on multipurpose fields, running track, additional parking and other additions to Panther Park.

The Cedar Grove Township Council revisited the idea to redevelop Panther Park during its Monday night meeting. “There are a few different concept drawings but the one that has generated the most interest includes a multipurpose football, soccer and lacrosse field with stands, a walking and running track, parking, lighting, concession stands and restrooms,” said Town Manager Tom Tucci. About six months ago the town received three proposals from different firms and initially set aside money for a design in the 2012 capital budget but the money was cut back and eventually removed, said Tucci. “The next step is appropriation for design,” he said. “You have to have design money in place before you can go out and ask for proposals.” The initial …

Council Eliminates Stipends, Announces 9/11 Service

Cedar Grove Township Council ends $4,000 stipends and announces Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony for 4 p.m. at town hall.

Stipends for current Cedar Grove council members are no more. The Cedar Grove Township Council followed through on a promise and unanimously passed a measure Monday night removing the $4,000 annual stipend. For the past few years, council members have put the stipend in the budget only to later remove it with a new measure. Led by Deputy Mayor Robert O’Toole, the council codified the measure put it in place because they have cut spending in other departments and want to show they can make the necessary cuts as well. “We have asked departments to cut down on spending and we need to do the same,” said Deputy Mayor Robert O'Toole. “We have plenty of volunteer organizations who aren't paid and I don't think we should have any kind of stipends…

Cedar Grove Council to Vote on Ending Stipends

Board plans to permanently end $21,000 payment at Sept. 10 meeting.

Cedar Grove Council members are sending a message to taxpayers - they are willing to work for free.  After refusing to accept $21,000 annual stipends for the last three years, council members are planning on eliminating the stipends entirely at their Sept. 10 meeting. Deputy Mayor Robert O’Toole told Patch Tuesday morning the council should lead by example in a time when they are asking almost every other department to cut back and operate more efficiently. He said the only thing in their budget the council could eliminate to help the township is the stipend.  “Each year (for the past three years), I’ve proposed that we don’t get a stipend,” O’Toole said. “Money is tight and we’re asking departments to cut back and be as lean as possible…

I admire the Council members for wanting to formalize their practice of the last several years. These are volunteer positions -- although demanding and time-consuming -- similar to being school board members. I agree with Deputy Mayor O'Toole that these positions should be sought based on a person's desire to serve our community and on the ability to commit his or her time, not on any token …   more ›

Cedar Grove Renovating South End Firehouse

With the structure crumbling, the township is prepared to help repair, remodel the building.

The South End Firehouse in Cedar Grove will get a major makeover this fall thanks to the efforts of Deputy Mayor Robert O’Toole and the township council. At the July 16 township council meeting, South End Firehouse Company President Michael Flohn told council members the firehouse had “serious structural deficiencies” and was in need of repair. The South End Firehouse is the oldest in town, having been built around 1940, largely from recycled materials from a factory that had been disassembled, according to Flohn. The firehouse is not owned by the township, but by the fire company itself. The company has been concerned about structural problems for a few years now, but only brought it to the attention of the township this year after …
