Saturday Mail Delivery to End, Postal Service Announces

Verona, Cedar Grove residents have mixed emotions on plan to end mail delivery by Aug. 1.

Calling the six-days-per-week mail delivery business model “no longer sustainable,” the U.S. Postal Service announced Wednesday it will eliminate Saturday delivery of mail by Aug. 1. The plan to change delivery from six days a week to five would only affect first-class mail. Packages, mail-order medicines, priority and express mail would still be delivered on Saturdays, and local post offices will remain open for business Saturdays. Some Verona and Cedar Grove residents seemed indifferent, while others have been adamantly against the decision. Last-Minute Filers Take Trip to Post Office

Business not as brisk as past years.

While there was a line waiting to enter the Cedar Grove Post Office when it opened this morning, U.S. Postal Sales and Service Associate and Lobby Manager Peter Kakalecz said it is just not the same as the crowds that came years ago. "We used to have people coming in at midnight, and offered coffee and cookies," Kakalecz said. With budget constraints and with more people filing electronically, the post office opened today at its regular time of 10 a.m. and will close at 6 p.m. "We are not authorized to stay open after 6 p.m. However, if someone comes at 6 p.m. we are not going to throw them out," Kakalecz said.  For those tax filers who truly will wait until the last minute, a posted notice lists local postal offices with automated …

Deadline is today for filing your 2011 taxes.

Today is the deadline to get your finances in shape for the taxman. The last day to file 2011 tax returns has been pushed back two days because April 15 - the normal deadline - fell on a Sunday and Monday was Emancipation Day, a holiday in Washington D.C. Verona and Cedar Grove residents who want to file a paper tax return can pick up last-minute 1040 forms at either the Cedar Grove Public Library, 1 Municipal Plaza, and Verona Public Library.
