Owner tells police he heard two of the cars being started up and saw them driven away from his home Wednesday morning.
Three luxury cars were reported stolen from a driveway in Cedar Grove early Wednesday morning, Police Chief Richard Vanderstreet said. A homeowner on Tiffany Court told police just before 8 a.m. he saw an Audi A4 pull into his driveway. He then heard his red 2012 Mercedes S550 and his silver 2006 Bentley Flying Spur being started and saw them driven away from his house followed by the Audi. The homeowner told police he later noticed a third car, a white 2012 Mercedes GL450, was also missing from his driveway. Four youth charged with criminal mischief, disorderly conduct after allegedly throwing potatoes through windows in Verona, Cedar Grove and Caldwell.
Four Cedar Grove teens have been charged for their alleged involvement in a potato-throwing spree in Verona, Cedar Grove and Caldwell in late March that damaged several properties, police said. The teens, ages 16 and 17, were charged on Wednesday, May 1, with criminal mischief and disorderly conduct following an investigation by Cedar Grove police. Their names were not released because of their ages. “The juveniles were processed and released to the custody of their guardians pending juvenile court proceedings,” police said. Police report five burglaries within two days.
Cedar Grove and Verona police reported a total of five burglaries between Tuesday, April 2 and Wednesday, April 3 in both townships, officials said. On Tuesday, April 2, Cedar Grove police were called to the Cedar Grove Garden Apartments on Pompton Avenue on a report of a burglary. The victim reported sometime between Sunday, March 31 and Tuesday evening, someone entered his apartment through a ground floor window and allegedly took cash from his bedroom, police said. That same day, a second resident of the complex reported several screens on her ground floor windows had been lifted up, but no entry had been made into her apartment, police said. Verona, Cedar Grove and Caldwell Police are investigating a number of recent incidents involving potatoes.
Residents of multiple Essex towns have reported property damaged by potatoes police believe were launched using a homemade cannon, according to officials. Three incidents of broken house windows and a damaged car where a potato was later found were reported to police in Cedar Grove, Verona and Caldwell in the last five days. Police believe the potatoes are being launched from a car or truck that pulls up to the intended target. No injuries were reported as a result of these incidents, which appear to be random pranks. A new bill working its way through the state Assembly would require New Jersey schools to link a panic button to local police departments.
A new bill, introduced by Assemb. Ralph Caputo (D-Belleville) requiring New Jersey schools to have a panic button to alert local authorities of potential life-threatening emergencies is working its way through the state Assembly. Assembly bill A3691 was introduced on Monday, Jan. 14 and referred to the Assembly Education Committee. Assemblyman Patrick J. Diegnan Jr. (D-18), chairman of the Education Committee, is one of the primary sponsors of the bill. The bill comes a month after the tragic shooting in Newtown, Conn., which left 26 people, including 20 children dead. Kearny man arrested, turned over to immigration officials after Saturday night traffic stop.
A 24-year old passenger in a car stopped by Cedar Grove police Saturday was an illegal alien and was turned over to immigration officials, Cedar Grove police said. Grimaldo D. Andia of Kearny was arrested and turned over to the Department of Homeland Security Office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Cedar Grove Police Chief Richard Vanderstreet said. “It looks like he was an illegal alien and failed to appear for deportation,” said Cedar Grove Police Chief Richard Vanderstreet. A 48-year-old West Orange man was arrested after he tried to pick up a prescription from a pharmacy while he was allegedly under the influence of a drug. Cedar Grove police said Scott P. Dellosso allegedly drove to the CVS Pharmacy at 387 Pompton Ave. in Cedar Grove and was waiting for the prescription in the parking lot when witnesses said he appeared disoriented and called police. When police arrived, they said Dellosso had driven to the pharmacy while under the influence and arrested him. He was taken to police headquarters and released pending a municipal court appearance.

PBA Honors Cedar Grove Police for joint sting at Cliffside Drive factory.
Cedar Grove police officials were among the honorees at the Annual Essex County PBA Conference Valor Awards Ceremony held Sunday in Cedar Grove. The ceremony, held at Il Tulipano restaurant, recognized the officers for their efforts resulting in the arrest of an organized group caught burglarizing a Cliffside Drive Factory on January 15, 2011. The arrests followed a sting operation in conjunction with the New Jersey State Police Cargo Theft Unit. Working with information the criminals were targeting the Cedar Grove location, the officers worked undercover both inside and outside the building. Cedar Grove man arrested for Wednesday accident at Pompton and Ozone avenues.
A 56-year-old Cedar Grove man was arrested Wednesday following a car accident that resulted in multiple injuries to another driver and several children. William R. McMahon was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated and assault by an automobile following the serious car crash at the intersection of Pompton and Ozone avenues in the township. According to police, McMahon was traveling north on Pompton Avenue at approximately 4:48 p.m. when he allegedly tried to make a left turn onto Ozone Avenue directly into the path of a 1997 Toyota Camry, driven by a 35-year-old Verona woman.
