Cedar Grove Council Recognizes Rescue Squad's 75 Years of Dedication

Cedar Grove Ambulance and Rescue Squad honored with a proclamation for its 75th anniversary.

On Monday night, The Cedar Grove Township Council expressed its thanks and gratitude to members of the Cedar Grove Ambulance and Rescue Squad and read a proclamation to celebrate the group’s 75th anniversary. Council members took turns showing appreciation and gratitude to the squad, especially since some of the council members recalled instances when their children needed medical assistance. Father Robert McLaughlin of St. Catherine of Siena Church gave the invocation at the beginning of the meeting as the 14 attending squad members bowed their heads. “The town donates $10,000 to the squad every year but it’s not enough,” said Deputy Mayor Robert O'Toole. “Since it’s the 75th anniversary, why not donate $75, one for every year they have …

Police Resuscitate Teacher, Board Recognizes Officers

Lara Bottner, a third-grade teacher at South End Elementary School went into cardiac arrest before revival by Cedar Grove Police at February school play.

While South End teacher Lara Bottner attended Cedar Grove High School's performance of Beauty and the Beast in February, she became ill and went into cardiac arrest in front of friends, students and other staff members. Guests had mostly already filed into the Cedar Grove High School auditorium on Feb. 21 to see high school students perform when the third-grade teacher, collapsed, fell down a flight of stairs and went into cardiac arrest. “Officers were there in a matter of minutes and found her unconscious and bleeding from a head wound,” said Cedar Grove Police Chief Richard Vanderstreet. “When the officers attended to her she stopped breathing and lost her pulse.” Patrolmen Joseph Russomanno and Jason Rivers started CPR and attached an …

Cear Grove Hosts Blood Center of New Jersey Donation

Residents say they feel it is important to donate blood as much as they can due to a blood shortage.

Residents from Verona, Cedar Grove, North Caldwell and other nearby towns lined up at the Cedar Grove Ambulance and Rescue Squad on Monday waiting for their turn to donate blood. “The Blood Center of New Jersey (BCNJ) is in a Severe Emergency Blood Shortage situation and needs all those who are eligible to please donate,” Rescue Squad officials said. Snow storms and seasonal flus have contributed to the blood shortage, they added. Darlene Black-Webb, a Registered Nurse and Team Leader for the Blood Center of New Jersey has been assisting with blood donations for 40 years, she said. Chamber of Commerce Gala Postponed Until Further Notice

Cedar Grove Chamber of Commerce, who was looking to raise money for the Cedar Grove Rescue Squad, will need to postpone the event until further notice after major sponsors pulled out.

The Cedar Grove Chamber of Commerce, led by president Allen Rosen, will need to postpone their gala, which was aiming to raise money for the Cedar Grove Ambulance and Rescue Squad. The event “Groovin at the Grove” was supposed to be at The Grove catering hall in February, but after several major sponsors pulled out, the gala may be rescheduled towards the end of next year, said Rosen. The Chamber had several major corporate sponsors pull out after Hurricane Sandy, instead putting their money to Sandy relief funds. "It blew us out of the water," said Rosen. Cedar Grove Rescue Squad Hosts CPR Class and Casino Trip

The Cedar Grove Ambulance and Rescue Squad will hold an American Heart Association First Aid course and a fundraising trip to Mount Airy Lodge in Pennsylvania.

The Cedar Grove Ambulance and Rescue Squad will be busy this weekend with first aid training courses and a trip to Mt. Airy Lodge. The Rescue Squad will be offering an American Heart Association First Aid course from 9 am to 12 pm on Saturday October 27th, at the Squad building located at 651 Pompton Avenue. They will be teaching the basics of first aid including basic principles, medical emergencies, injury management and environmental emergencies. Community Blood Drive Draws Half of the Expected Donors

On the second floor of the Cedar Grove Ambulance and Rescue Squad building, the Blood Center of New Jersey held a community blood drive last Monday, where 22 local residents came out to donate said the organization. “I try to give blood as often as I can because I’m A-negative, which is a popular type,” said Verona resident, Donna DiNorcia, who has given over a gallon of blood and has a certificate to prove it. “If I can save someone’s life, I think that would be nice.” A $10 gift card for ShopRite was given to the donors, said resident nurse team leader, Kathy Schweitzer, of Neptune.
