Caldwell College is officially seeking university status, the school announced Monday. The Caldwell College Board of Trustees unanimously passed a resolution charging the school to take the steps necessary to achieve university status, according to President Nancy Blattner. The College, located at 9 Ryerson Ave. in Caldwell has graduated many Verona and Cedar Grove residents since it was incorporated in 1939. There are currently 63 Verona and Cedar Grove students attending the College. “This is certainly a defining moment in the history of Caldwell College and in its future,” Blattner stated in a release. “The campus community is excited about the possibility of claiming the designation of university.” A task force will begin to complete…

John Yurko of Cedar Grove, and Caldwell College Professor, took home gold and silver metals for singles and doubles tennis in the New Jersey Senior Olympics.
John Yurko, a Cedar Grove resident, and Caldwell College Communication Arts Professor, took home the Gold medal in tennis at the New Jersey Senior Olympics. The New Jersey Senior Olympics was held on September 7, 8 and 9 in Woodbridge Township. The games hosted 58 events and saw more than 875 participants. "I was invited to play doubles by my friend, and he suggested that since I already paid the entrance fee I might as well sign up for singles as well,” said Yurko. Five students from Cedar Grove High School will perform in the “Christmas Spectacular” on Dec. 7 at Caldwell College.
Five band students from Cedar Grove High School will be performing in the Caldwell College Honor Band and Choir Holiday Concert this year, a prestigious honor for high school students. The students selected are senior Alex Campbell, French horn; senior Will Reinhardt, flute; senior Johnny Frabrazzo, trumpet; sophomore Jennie Silber and freshman Peter Candia each on alto saxophone. The “Christmas Spectacular” will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7 in the Caldwell College Student Center Auditorium. The Caldwell Environmental Commission and the Caldwell College Sustainability Committee, along with EcoMatters and Advanced Performance Solar, will offer a Solar Screening Event. The free event will take place at Werner Hall on the Caldwell College campus on Monday, Oct. 15, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Homeowners will learn about the benefits of solar energy and have the chance to be screened for a zero-cost solar installation that would provide them with discounted electricity. “We’re excited to host this event with Caldwell College and invite all members of the community to join us to see if their roof is suitable for solar,” Ann Marchioni, chairperson of Caldwell Environmental Commission, said in a press release. Verona Board of Education members announced Tuesday night both the high school and middle school graduations would take place at Caldwell College beginning next spring. The board discussed changing the site of the graduations to the college during a previous meeting. Weather has played a big part in this decision, Superintendent Steven Forte said previously. Local golfers will hit the links Monday for a good cause. LuNello Italian Restaurant, 182 Stevens Ave. in Cedar Grove will be hosting its fourth annual charity golf outing to raise money for The Caldwell College Center for Autism and Behavior Analysis. The tournament typically raises about $10,000 a year for the college, said coordinator Karen Cirangle. Cedar Grove resident Angelina A. Scimone, a chemistry professor, carried the mace to recognize her years of service to the college.
At its 70th Commencement ceremony, 382 students graduated from Caldwell College this week in the George R. Newman Center on the college campus with the first graduation class for the college's Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Angelina A. Scimone, Ph.D., of Cedar Grove and professor of chemistry at Caldwell College, held the traditional mace at the head of the college's academic procession on May 20. Carrying the mace is an honor given to a senior faculty member. Scimone was recognized at Caldwell College's Founder’s Day ceremony on March 22 for 25 years of service to the college.
