Council unanimously approves blueprint at Monday night meeting.
The Cedar Grove Township Council voted unanimously to adopt a $12.5 million 2013-14 municipal budget Monday night that will see resident’s taxes increase by 2 percent. Under the blueprint, a Cedar Grove homeowner will see a tax bill increase of $46.62 per $100,000 of assessed valuation on a home assessed at the borough’s average of $466,200, Tucci said when the budget was first introduced on Monday, March 18. The average local tax levy in Cedar Grove is projected to be $1,934.73, he told the council. The assessed value of the average home in Cedar Grove decreased from $470,400 in 2012, he said. Board reviews, passes 2013-14 blueprint Tuesday night.
The Verona Board of Education approved a $33 million final budget for the 2013-14 school year during Tuesday night's meeting. According to Verona Superintendent Steven Forte, 94.5 percent of the budget will be funded through local taxes, which means a tax levy increase of 2.5 percent. Based on the average assessed home in Verona at $360,200, a Verona resident can expect an increase of $126 in their property taxes, said Verona Board of Education member Joseph Bellino. By state mandate a budget does not have to go to a public vote if it is under a two percent increase on the tax levy. $27 million budget means $103.06 as the average property tax on an average assessed home of $466,200, said Cedar Grove Superintendent Dr. Gene Polles.
The Cedar Grove Board of Education began presenting numbers for its proposed 2013-14 budget with a 2 percent cap during Tuesday night's meeting. Under the proposed $27,709,528 budget, Superintendent Dr. Gene Polles said, "We are looking at $103.06 as the average property tax on an average assessed home of $466,200.” Administrators presented the budget for technology, curriculum, special education, athletics and co-curricular activities Tuesday. Technology Informational Technology Director James Walsh presented current forms of technology used throughout the district and highlighted some needed improvements. Budget season continues in Verona and Cdear Grove.
The word "budget" is still on the tip of everyone's tongues as budget season continues in Verona and Cedar Grove. The Cedar Grove Township Council has completed their public budget hearings and will meet for a regular council meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 4 at town hall. An agenda is not yet available. New Jersey Department of Education announced Verona and Cedar Grove will receive the same amount of state funding as last year.
[Updated Fri. March 1, 11:30 a.m.] State aid for the 2013-14 school year for both the Verona and Cedar Grove school districts will remain flat, figures released by the state Thursday afternoon revealed. Both districts were hopeful they would see a significant increase in state aid after Gov. Chris Christie promised 377 districts across the state would receive increases in funding during Tuesday's 2013 budget address. According to the New Jersey Department of Education, Cedar Grove will be receiving the same amount of state aid, $723,287, as the previous year. Township Manager Tom Tucci completes presentation, but the process is just beginning.
Cedar Grove Township Manager Tom Tucci and the township council continued to outline the 2013 budget Tuesday night with the remaining departments from Monday's hearing. The hearing continued with budgeting for municipal court, engineering, ambulance and rescue squad, police and fire departments, along with several public works items. According to Tucci, public safety is the largest single portion of the municipal budget, which is made up of police and fire appropriation requests. The 2013 budget calls for $3,891,337 for the police department, an increase of $108,902 from 2012. Part of the additional funds will be used for two new police Ford Interceptor SUV's. The Cedar Grove Township Council began its annual budget hearing Monday night under the tutelage of Cedar Grove Township Manager Thomas Tucci, who guided the council through the first half of the budget items. Council looks to focus cuts on capital budget projects portion of budget.
The Cedar Grove Township council held a special council meeting prior to the regular meeting last night where they discussed new legislation concerning the township budget. The main issue discussed in both meetings focused on cuts to the capital budget projects portion of the budget. Money will help defray costs of freak Halloween storm.
The Cedar Grove Township Council announced last night the township has received a portion of the federal funds they were expecting to help pay for cleanup from the Halloween snowstorm. The first installment of the town’s relief money was received from the Federal Environmental Management Agency totaling $111,404.51. The second installment is expected in two to three weeks.
