Verona Students Return to School Today

Pupils hitting the books once again as 2012-13 year begins.

Students have had all summer to prepare for today. With their pencils sharpened and backpacks zipped, the Verona School District opens the term this morning. There are 2,180 students attending school throughout the district this year, said Superintendent Steven Forte. “We are all very excited about the new school year," Forte said. "The Technology and Buildings and Grounds Departments have been working hard over the summer to get the buildings ready for students and staff," he said “We also welcome 23 new staff members to the district this year who are all excited to get started working with Verona students.” The district will be welcoming new teachers this year as well. On Aug. 30, the district held a new teacher orientation for all new …

Pack a Lunch With a Healthy Punch

This mom is planning back to school lunches and has some tips to share.

Back to school means back to packing lunches. Yikes! I have such a hard time coming up with new ideas.  Peanut butter and jelly gets boring. Nutella has been a great backup especially paired with some strawberries, but that gets old too. Regardless, both options will be in my pantry for busy mornings but I need some more interesting solutions. Do you have any good lunch box ideas? I asked around and some other moms shared their tips with me. Elise S., a Cinnaminson mom of two, told me how she brightens up peanut butter and jelly or tuna sandwiches with a little trick. “I sometimes cut them into different shapes with cookie cutters or use a little gadget that cuts the sandwich into a circle with no crusts.” Kids love the “no crust” …

Ramp Up for Back-to-School with Bedtime Math

With the new school year almost upon us, help get your kids’ brains working again with this fun, free daily email newsletter.

With back-to-school stresses piling up, Laura Overdeck wants to let children and parents in on a little secret: math can be fun. Really.  Overdeck is on a mission to change the way Americans think about math — especially given that math anxiety has been tracked in kids as young as age 5. This is what inspired her to create Bedtime Math, a nonprofit that sends out a daily email with a math problem tailored to “wee ones,” little and big kids. Bedtime Math has been very successful in both Verona and Cedar Grove. “Families signed up for the program and got calendar of summer months and stars. They can go online and have math problem delivered every day,” said Cedar Grove Youth Services Librarian Natalie Cheetham. “They put a star on the …

Back-to-School is High Season for Child Identity Theft

As children head back to school, identity experts suggest parents slow down and carefully consider how and why they hand over a child’s information.

For parents, back-to-school season equals lots of paperwork — not only for school enrollment, but also for youth sports, clubs and even a teen’s first after-school job. Unfortunately, the piles of paper often leave a child vulnerable to identity theft, an increasingly serious problem in this country. The number of reported child identity theft cases in the U.S. has increased by 200 percent since 2003, according to the Federal Trade Commission. A 2011 Carnegie Mellon CyLab study found one in 10 children has had his or her identity compromised. Despite the increasing prevalence of this problem, more than 80 percent of parents with minor children say they are largely unfamiliar with child identity theft, according to Equifax, a Georgia-based…

Tips For Fighting Back-to-School Stress

Practicing healthy stress management habits at home, as stress can increase during the school year.

As summer draws to an end, many families are beginning to prepare for the upcoming school year. The New Jersey Psychological Association (NJPA) is encouraging parents to focus on practicing healthy stress management habits at home, as stress can increase during the school year.  According to psychological research, family plays a key role in modeling healthy behaviors that lead to lifelong wellness and good health. Children who learn and practice healthy habits at home, such as regular physical activity and a balanced diet, have a better change at managing stress during the school year. “Many people don’t realize that they are already practicing healthy stress management techniques at home, such as getting enough sleep and openly …

10 Must Have Back-to-School iPhone Apps

A list of applications that can make your school year much easier.

Time Magazine recently released its list of the top 10 iPhone apps for students headed back to school. Patch took the time to tweak Time's list and add a few of our favorites as well. Whether you're headed to your first year of high school or your first year away at college, these apps will make your life significantly easier.

Back-to-School Brings Tears, Fears

Students need to get supplies for their classes and activities, but it's not always easy.

Everyone knows that summer doesn’t last forever, but for kids the rudest reminders are always the gigantic red banners in the stores proudly announcing an end to their freedom. Cool-looking new provisions, like backpacks, notebooks, writing implements and binders will impress their friends, and kids remember the excitement that comes with the first few days of school, reconnecting with friends who were out of reach over the summer and winning new ones. Some schools are more helpful in offering guidance than others. Golda Och Academy in West Orange purchased supplies for students as a fundraiser this year, according to Adinah Biallik, mother of three children, ages 14, 10 and 3½. “They made our lives a little easier this year,” Biallik said…

Lunch Box Memories

Do you remember your favorite lunch box? Today's kids have as many options as ever but nothing will take the place of the Partridge Family or Scooby-Doo.

Lunch boxes have changed in design and shape over the years, but the basic idea is the same. Along with space inside for a cold drink, sandwich and snack, the cover is devoted to a favorite cartoon, character, TV show or movie. That's why Justin Bieber and Darth Vader and Japanese cartoon characters are staring out at shoppers from the shelves of Target. Back in the '70s, the lunch boxes were aluminum. In the '80s, they gave way to plastic. Vintage lunch boxes now are highly collectible. They are displayed as collections in people's homes, and sometimes they get their own art gallery shows.  Do you remember a favorite lunch box? What was it? Have a picture handy? Share it with Patch!
