Saturday Turkey Trot Raises Money for Rare Children's Disease

5k will raise money for Verona resident Zoey Penny, who was diagnosed at five months with progeria, a rapid aging syndrome afflicting children.

The annual “Miles of Hope” Turkey Trot will return to Verona Park on Nov. 24 to raise money for a Verona child suffering from a rare, fatal disease.  Team Zoey is a chapter of the Progeria Research Foundation, which seeks to develop treatments and find a cure for the progeria, a disease that causes rapid aging at about seven to 10 times the normal rate in children. Zoey Penny was diagnosis at the age of five months and her family has been working to find a cure ever since.  The organization is holding this event “to raise awareness of Progeria, an extremely rare fatal genetic disease that affects children by causing them to rapidly age in their skin, bones, as well as in general health,” members of Team Zoey said. “All proceeds will go to …

Bloomfield 5K a Cause for 'Comfort'

Saturday's Comfort Zone Camp 5K run/walk will raise money for nation's biggest bereavement camp

Hundreds of walkers and runners will get in the zone Saturday to benefit the nation's largest bereavement camp for children. Comfort Zone Camp will host its third annual fundraising 5K walk/run at Brookdale Park this weekend to help support grieving campers from across the nation. The nonprofit organization, which has sites in California, Massachusetts, Virginia and New Jersey, provides free weekend camp for children ages 7-17 who have lost a parent, sibling or caregiver. Brookdale Park is located at 473 Watchung Avenue in Bloomfield. Running Addict 'Glad' to Cross 2,000 Mile Mark

A year long goal to run 2,000 miles in 2011 is fulfilled with hours to spare.

A South Orange man recently fulfilled his goal of running 2,000 miles in the year 2011. And he did most of it in custom running sandals he and his wife make themselves. After a great deal of research and trial and error, Rich Gladstone, and his wife, Jennie Amias, have a fledgling business in crafting and selling what they now call GladSoles.
