Verona Council Introduces $21.3M Budget, Discusses Tax Impact

Three possible tax levies to be considered by council.

At Monday night’s Verona Township Council meeting, the board reviewed and introduced the 2013 municipal budget and discussed the potential tax impacts. Verona Township Manager Joseph Martin called the introduction an “important step in the budget process,” adding the blueprint is not yet finalized and further discussions need to take place before the plan is eventually adopted by the council. The 2013 budget totals $21,311,735, of which $15,234,972, or 67 percent, will be covered by taxes. The tax levy would have been $19,764 lower than in 2012 if not for storm emergencies, Martin said. “The council needs to decide in the coming weeks on the levy amount to be raised by 2013,” said Martin. Verona Workshop Reviews Capital, IT Budgets

Council hosted third roundtable Tuesday night prior to April 1 introduction.

The Verona Township Council held the third in a series of budget workshops Tuesday night and is now one step closer to introducing the $21,310,234 township budget for 2013. During Tuesday night's special session, Township Engineer Jim Helb presented the capital budget and Information Technology and Office of Emergency Management Director Jeff Hayes presented expenses and accomplishments for the communications department. Cedar Grove Introduces $12.5 Million Budget

Municipal taxes to increase two percent because of a decrease of assessed value of homes.

The Cedar Grove Township Council approved a $12.5 million 2013-14 municipal budget Monday night that will see resident’s taxes increase by 2 percent, officials said. A Cedar Grove homeowner will see a tax bill increase of $46.62 per $100,000 of assessed valuation on a home assessed at the borough’s average of $466,200, Tucci said. The average local tax levy in Cedar Grove is projected to be $1,934.73, he told the council. The assessed value of the average home in Cedar Grove decreased from $470,400 in 2012, he said. Of the $12.5 million budget, $8,480,403 will be raised by taxes, he added. Verona Waits for State Aid Figures

District is anxious to see if it will be included in the 377 New Jersey school districts to see an increase.

The Verona Board of Education is waiting to see if they will be among the 377 school districts to see an increase in state aide as promised in Gov. Chris Christie's 2013 budget address. The 2013 New Jersey budget will provide an increase of $87 million in school aid, bringing the total state aid in education to almost $9 billion, said Christie during his Tuesday night address. However, only 377 out of the 600 New Jersey School District's will be seeing an increase, said Verona Board of Education member Joseph Bellino during Tuesday night's board meeting. “The other 233 that will not be sharing in the increase will maintain what they have,” said Bellino. Verona Begins 2013 Budget Hearings

Township hosts annual budget workshop, broadcasts session on VTV for first time.

The Verona Township Council began the task of assembling its annual budget with a Monday night workshop, which included proposed budgets for the Verona Police Department and Office of Community Service. Verona plans to decrease its 2013 budget by about $100,000 from 2012. The 2013 budget, which is still under review and discussion, will be around $21,310,234, while the 2012 budget was $21,411,838 “The budget is an on-going effort and a year-round process,” said Township Manager Joseph Martin. “We are half-way through the budget process. Cedar Grove Continues to Outline Budget

Township Manager Tom Tucci completes presentation, but the process is just beginning.

Cedar Grove Township Manager Tom Tucci and the township council continued to outline the 2013 budget Tuesday night with the remaining departments from Monday's hearing. The hearing continued with budgeting for municipal court, engineering, ambulance and rescue squad, police and fire departments, along with several public works items. According to Tucci, public safety is the largest single portion of the municipal budget, which is made up of police and fire appropriation requests. The 2013 budget calls for $3,891,337 for the police department, an increase of $108,902 from 2012. Part of the additional funds will be used for two new police Ford Interceptor SUV's. Cedar Grove Begins Budget Hearings

Township council will continue discussions at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29.

The Cedar Grove Township Council began its annual budget hearing Monday night under the tutelage of Cedar Grove Township Manager Thomas Tucci, who guided the council through the first half of the budget items. According to a recent Star-Ledger report, Cedar Grove had the lowest municipal taxes in Essex County in 2012, a fact not overlooked by Tucci and members of the township council. “Cedar Grove has the lowest local tax rate in the county, but we cannot rest on last year's laurels, every year stands on its own” said Tucci. “This year we will try to achieve that goal again and do the best we can for our residents.” According to the Star-Ledger report, the average municipal tax in Cedar Grove is $1,853, well below the $3,942 average Essex …
