Verona Schools To Kick Off Latest Partnership

District will kick off a partnership with Trattoria Bella Gente in Verona on Thursday.

The Verona School District announced it is striking up another business partnership, spearheaded by Superintendent Steven Forte, who has been searching for alternative forms of revenue for the district. Beginning in May, Trattoria Belle Gente in Verona will donate money to Verona Foundation for Educational Excellence (VFEE). “All people have to do is dine out on Thursdays and write Verona Schools on their checks and Bella Gente will donate 10 percent to VFEE,” said Forte. Forte and representatives from VFEE will kick off the new partnership on Thursday, April 25 at 3:30 p.m. at Belle Gente. “When a donation is made to the Verona Foundation for Educational Excellence, 100 percent of the profits benefit the students,” said Foundation …

Verona Coaches Recognized for Achievements

Andrea Jordan and Gene Leporati were awarded at the NJSIAA and NJSCA awards luncheon.

Two Verona Coaches were recognized on Sunday, April 14, at the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) and New Jersey School Counselor Association (NJSCA) awards luncheon at the Pines Manor in Edison. Andrea Jordan, Health and Physical Education teacher at H.B. Whitehorne Middle School, was honored by the National Federation of Coaches as a state winner for her distinguished background, experience, service and promotion in swimming, said Verona Athletic Director Gary Farishian. Girls Track Coach Gene Leporati was also inducted in to the State Coaches Hall of Fame. Coach Leporati joins other great Verona coaches in the State Coaches Hall of Fame behind, Al Rotella, George Stiefbold, and Bob Graham, said Farishian. …

School Security Expert Presents Review

Representative of Triangle Training Group, LLC releases report on its security findings for the Cedar Grove School District to the board of education.

After the tragic shooting deaths of 20 children in Newtown, Conn. on Dec. 14, 2012, Cedar Grove parents approached the board of education to ask what was being done to ensure the safety of their children. In response, the board hired Triangle Training Group, LLC, for around $12,000 to review school safety measures and report back. On Tuesday, April 16, Cedar Grove resident Bill Fearon, an active duty law-enforcement officer and President of Triangle Training Group did just that —presenting his findings to the board. “The biggest think we looked at is cooperation from the local police department, to the administration and school board” said Fearon. “The collaboration together has been phenomenal.” Fearon has been doing school safety and …

Verona BOE Eyes Referendum for Facility Upgrades

Vote planned for December 2013 or January 2014 on buildings and grounds repairs, Forte says.

The Verona Board of Education Tuesday discussed holding a referendum for repairs to various buildings and grounds repairs and upgrades, presented during a November meeting. “We are waiting to hear back from engineers on the cost,” said Verona Superintendent Steven Forte. “We are looking at a referendum hopefully in December or January.”  During a meeting last November, Verona Director of Facilities Paul McDevitt provided an update for the board on the status of buildings and grounds, including previous improvements and a laundry list of what still needs to be done. Report: DePalma Signs With NFL's San Diego Chargers

Verona High School graduate, who spent time with both Jets and Giants, inks two-year pact with AFC West team.

Verona High School graduate Dan DePalma has signed with the NFL’s San Diego Chargers, according to published report. The 23-year-old 5-foot, 11-inch wide receiver, has previously seen practice squad and pre-season action with both the Jets and Giants, signed a two-year deal with the team, according to a NorthJersey.com report. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. DePalma, a 2007 graduate who attended West Chester University in Pennsylvania, will compete for a spot on the 53-man roster for playing time, the report said. He joins fellow Hillbilly Anthony Fasano, who recently signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as a free agent after playing tight end with the Miami Dolphins, in the AFC West division.

High School SAT Scores in Essex County [Interactive Map]

View the average SAT scores and median household incomes of more than 20 public high schools in Essex County to see where Verona and Cedar Grove ranked.

The higher the median income of a school district, the higher the SAT scores in Essex County.  The only eight public high schools to meet the state’s average SAT benchmark of 1550 are in school districts where median incomes are at least $88,000, according to the New Jersey School Performance Report. The eight schools’ median incomes are well above the county average of $55,876 and state average of $71,180.  All but two of the 19 public high schools in Essex County that did not meet the state SAT benchmark were in communities with a median income below $88,000. West Orange and Cedar Grove were the only high schools in the county with median incomes above $88,000 that failed to meet the state benchmark.   The highest average SAT scores came…

Verona Brothers To Play Football Together at Northwestern University

Two brothers at Bergen Catholic High School will both be playing for the Northwestern Wildcats in the fall of 2014.

Two Verona brothers have announced they will both be attending Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. to play football for the Wildcats. Cameron Queiro of Verona, a current Bergen Catholic student-athlete has “verbally committed” to playing football at Northwestern University, according to school officials. The Verona junior, an outside linebacker for Bergen Catholic, said he will be joining his older brother Kyle, a senior defensive back for the Bergen Catholic Crusaders at Northwestern to play for coach Pat Fitzgerald’s program in the fall of 2014, said Bergen Catholic's Sports Information Director Dan Long. “Cameron Queiro started at outside linebacker for Bergen Catholic in the 2012 season, and finished an injury-shortened season …

Verona and Cedar Grove College students were recognized for their Dean's List achievements.

The following local college students really made the grade in the Fall 2012 college semester and have been recognized by their colleges for their efforts: Gabrielle San Roman of Cedar Grove Gabrielle San Roman of Cedar Grove, a Music Education major, has been named to the Dean's List for the Fall 2012 semester at Westminster Choir College of Rider University. “Located in Princeton, NJ, Westminster Choir College prepares musicians for careers as performers and as music leaders in schools, universities, churches and professional and community organizations,” school officials said. Cedar Grove Musicians Team Up With Vermont High School For Concert

Students from Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, Vt. will perform alongside Cedar Grove High School musicians for a special concert on Saturday, April 6.

Cedar Grove High School music students will be partnering with a high school in Vermont for special performances in Vermont as well as Cedar Grove High School. Cedar Grove students traveled to Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, Vt. on Tuesday, April 2 to perform alongside students there in a benefit concert. Both schools will travel to Cedar Grove on Friday, April 5 for a special performance of “Les Miserables” at Cedar Grove High School to be held the following night. “'Les Miserables' will provide the students with opportunities for a wide range of voices,” said Cedar Grove Music Director Jennifer Jessen-Foose. “A curriculum guide explaining the story behind the musical will accompany the student’s learning and reading.” The …
