The remediation of Verona High School's Football field could cost upwards of $7 million.
The Verona Board of Education is looking into several different options to fix the High School football field, which is peppered with sink-holes that popped up during summer practice. Shortly after, the Board hired French and Parello Associates to test the field and report back. On Tuesday, May 14, representatives of French and Parello Associates presented their findings to the board with several different options. Geotechnical engineer Joseph Tierney and environmental engineer Bryan Heller discussed the history of the field, which was filled in with soil and debris in the 1970's. David Njoku of Cedar Grove broke the Essex County record in the triple jump.
The Cedar Grove Boys and Girls Varsity Track Team competed in the sectional championship in Newark on Saturday, May 11. David Njoku of Cedar Grove broke the Essex County record in the triple jump when he soared 47-8 in the Colonial Division, according to the Star-Ledger. "I think it was speed and my second phase that was really important today," Njoku told the newspaper. "I just ran as fast as I could and jumped as far as I could and was able to get the record."

Cedar Grove principal Brian Cavanagh will retire on June 28, after 33 years in education.
After serving the Cedar Grove school district for the past 15 years, South End Principal Brian Cavanagh will be retiring in June. Cavanagh has been in the education system for a total of 33 years and will be sad to leave, he said. “South End is a great school and every school has facilities but the people, the teachers, kids and parents have really made it what it is,” he said. Cavanagh grew up and attended high school in Bloomfield before going on to pursue his undergraduate degree and teaching certification and graduate degree from Kean University (formerly Kean College). He spent five years in Boonton and 15 years in Bloomfield before coming to Cedar Grove as the Cedar Grove High School vice principal, where he served for five years. …

School ranks 718 in the nation's top 2,000 high schools.
In the most recent Newsweek America's Best High School rankings, Verona High School was rated number 718 and also ranked number 44 of the highest among open enrollment schools in New Jersey. Since 2012 the school has moved up 57 spots, having come from 775th nationally in 2012. "This honor comes as the result of many years of planning and implementation of new curriculum and expanded offerings district-wide," said Verona Superintendent Steven Forte. "This is truly an amazing accomplishment for Verona." The publication gave the high school an overall score of 3.13. The top school in the country, Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky, was given 4.84. Newsweek ranked the high schools based on six components: 25 …

Cedar Grove Superintendent Dr. Gene Polles is on medical leave and may not return before his June retirement.
Cedar Grove Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gene Polles, who is set to retire in June, may not be finishing up the school year, the Board of Education announced Tuesday. Polles informed the Board on Thursday, April 25, that he will be on medical leave effective immediately. “It's nothing life-threatening,” said Board of Education President Frank Mandala, who added that he could not give any further information. “He is following the advice of his doctors,” he added. It is unclear whether Polles will be able to return to work before the end of the school year but the Board is planning ahead as if he will not, said Mandala. Third- and fourth-grade students at Forest Avenue School in Verona got a unique opportunity for a glimpse into the eye of a major hurricane Tuesday, as “Hurricane Hunter” Commander Carl Newman presented some of his work, standing alongside Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-11th District). On Tuesday, April 30, Frelinghuysen and Newman visited several area schools, and concluded with a presentation for Forest Avenue's third- and fourth-grade classes. “I try to bring a Hurricane Hunter and an astronaut to each congressional district every year,” said Frelinghuysen. “It's important to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers at elementary schools. The Verona Board of Education received a curriculum update for the 2013-14 school year from three district administrators during Tuesday night's meeting. New library art space named for 2002 college graduate who died of complications from muscular dystrophy in 2003.
On Thursday, Bloomfield College officials opened their new Scott H. Kaplan Art gallery, named for a fondly remembered 2002 graduate who passed away a year after graduation from muscular dystrophy. Kaplan, a Verona resident, was a Creative Arts & Technology student skilled with graphic design who made his mark on the campus as a student, friend and advocate for the disabled. The new gallery, on the second floor of the Bloomfield library, was partially funded by Kaplan’s parents who have pledged money over the next five years for the upkeep of the space.
