North End Fourth Grader Raises Over $500 for Japanese Disaster Victims

Donations being accepted through today at fundraiser he organized himself.

Peter Corso, a fourth-grader at North End School, was moved to do something for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. He spoke to his principal about setting up a collection at school to have funds directed to the Red Cross and UNICEF.

In Peter's own words, "I did this because people were in need. The people have no good safe water to drink. It's important because water helps to sustain your life. I chose these charities because they help children and families around the world when they are in need, and some proceeds might go to Haiti too."

North End Principal Dr. Lawrence Neugebauer has allowed Peter to display posters around the school and set up collection jars in each classroom. Peter set a goal of $500 and has already surpassed that; collections will continue through April 15.

Peter’s cousin, Daniel Maloof, was inspired to do the same in Maplewood, and his school is now holding a similar fundraiser ().

The cousins have been invited to bring their contributions to the Red Cross office in person so they can learn more about how the Red Cross is helping children and families locally and around the world and the boys are planning a trip to the Fairfield office when the drive is over.

Members of the community are welcome to participate. You may send your check (payable to “Red Cross” or “UNICEF”--no cash please) to Corso Fund for Japan, North End School, 122 Stevens Avenue, Cedar Grove, NJ 07009. Donations will be accepted through April 15. For more information about how these organizations are responding to the crisis in Japan, see the following web sites: www.redcross.org, www.unicef.org.
